A friend of mine (the guitarist of the band Cerce - they are amazing) sold me his broken Sunn combo for a steal because it had caught fire at a show and he's financing a Science head. I picked this up and had my tech go through it, and it's good as new! Sounds amazing too. Before I go into any detail, here's a picture:

This amp was SEVERELY broken. My tech had to do the following:

- replace a burnt choke
- replace the power tubes (2x 6550)
- replace various resistors that had blown out
- rewire the reverb tank
- undo a botched mod to the speaker jacks (this was from a while ago, when my buddy bought the amp it was already like that)
- rewire the output transformer
- fix multiple cold or fractured solder joints

Needless to say, I'm glad it was fixable. Even with all the repairs, the cost of this amp is less than what I've seen them go for on Ebay.

Anyway, on to a proper review. The amp is a 2x12 combo rated at 100 watts according to the Sunn catalog from the time. I'd put it closer to 80 watts but 6550's are powerful tubes, so I can't be sure. For an amp from 1974, the control layout is pretty sophisticated. The amp has two independently wired channels with a shared master volume and a channel-assignable reverb. The clean channel has nothing but volume, bass, and treble knobs along with a bright switch. The gain channel has the same controls along with a midrange frequency selector (750 hz, 1.5 khz, and 3khz - incidentally the same as a V4) and a switch that goes between lo, normal, and distort to select the gain range.

The clean channel is the typical Sunn clean sound. It's big, loud, and pristine thanks to the ultra-linear transformer. I turned it up quite a bit and didn't get a hint of breakup, which is excellent. The second channel has a really beefy sound with the gain cranked. It's similar to the infamous Beta Lead, but with a more organic tube sound. The midrange selector lends a great deal of control over the sound. The reverb is a bit noisy (I suspect it needs new transistors in the buffer/driver circuit) but it is quite lush and I can have it on either channel or both, which is a very cool feature.

All in all this amp is excellent. I'll be giving it a proper test run at my band's next gig in a few weeks and I can't wait!

Sweet! Sunns are so cool. I want a quirky old amp like that. HNAD, I can't believe you managed to fix all that and it still came out cheaper. Good grab!

Thank you!

I'm convinced this is the loudest combo I've ever heard.

EDIT:

My tech is excellent! For those in the Boston area in need of a tech, Janice at Mr. Music is the best around.

Sweet deal on that amp.

Also, I have no idea why, but I'm kinda digging that band Cerce. I almost turned it off until I heard a blast beat and then noticed that borderline crust, hardcore punk style. Not sure I care for the singer though. A little shrill.

I feel like those guys could make a really sick crust punk band like Phobia or Disrupt.

That's the best part about that band. Having a female singer isn't even what sets them apart, although it certainly helps. Their songwriting and instrumentals are incredibly strong and they have a pretty unique blend of 90s hardcore with other, heavier styles. Fun fact: their drummer's background is in jazz and hip-hop.
