my rig has a coffee maker, but i never use it cuz it makes my amp hum... i was thinking about putting a noise gate after it.

seriously though. i have been wigging on this thing



it converts a monophonic signal into midi. i am integrating it into my setup.

Yep, pretty coloured cables.

It's unusual because it's a fairly conventional 3 channel amp mounted into a rack with lots of MIDI trickery. I guess my diagram didn't show that properly. With that setup I can get an infinite range of gain structures. I haven't seen a lot of people doing it this way. The GP-8 sets the boost and switches the amp and the Quaddy sets the Master Volume and it all happens simultaneously thanks to MIDI.
It can do anything from Voxy cleans to Mesa Mark type high gain and everything in between.

i knew that, but most people didn't have a 400 level class in block diagrams in college.

now that it is in english, they can bask in your glory.

btw boys and girls, cath didn't point this out, but the Abbey Harmonic II is also very unusual. most likely won't see another one on the forums.

@trashed: i too am not a big fuzz fan. i have a bit of a love/hate relationship with the effect.

i don't get it there are probably at least 50 semi common fuzz pedals out there some costing several hundred and there are so many variations. yet they seem to sell like crazy. at least from forum classifieds on here HC RT and TGP.

and if i wanted one they are so damn simple i could make it with very little thought or effort.

It is true, I've only ever seen two Abbeys in all my years on the scene gigging; mine and the one I heard that convinced me to buy one. It took years of searching the classifieds to find one. I've had an ebay search running for over two years that will email me if one pops up - nothing yet.

My rig is actually fairly simple and not that unusual, except in a few minor ways.

1. I run only two effects and they are both in my loop: a 10-band EQ and an ISP Decimator. I kinda cheat here, though since my amp has built in reverb that I quite like.

2. My 10-Band only has 2 frequencies that are cut - 1Khz and 2Khz, both cut by about 6db. At the same time, the mids on my amp are set pretty high and I use the mid "-" setting, while boosting the rest of the mid frequencies on my EQ.

3. I use a $1200 Egnater Head through a $230 Jet City Cab

4. I play in a Modern Metal band, but I'm using a Heritage Cherry Sunburst Les Paul with Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates (bridge) and AlNiCo II Pro (neck). I don't particularly like Billy Gibbons's tone, and I got the AlNiCo II Pro because I fell in love with the creamy tone Slash got out of it. Now I use it for cleans and getting a kinda Liquidy John Petrucci-esque tone for some leads.

5. I have 3 separate ways I boost on my amp's footswitch, and I use each of them separately for certain things and combinations of them together for certain things. The way my amp's reverb works, it actually boosts your volume slightly, plus it makes your tone sound "bigger" anyway. Then, I always have my mids cut, so when I turn that off on my footswitch, it boosts them. Finally, my amp has a 2nd master volume that is used as a boost.

6. My backup rig is a Blues Junior that I plug into my Jet City cab with a Hardwire TL-2 in front of it. I actually really like the tone I get, but because it's not my rig (the BJ belongs to the other guitarist in my band) I hate using it.

I guess most of mine are more unorthodox methods or situations than unusual parts of my rig.

And I didn't mention my main guitar. Custom built to my specs/design - banned ebony fingerboard, Aussie red maple body (birdseye canadian rock maple neck through) and 29 frets. That's pretty unusual too. I aint one for convention.

It looks great in person. The interplay of colours under lights is astonishing. And yes it plays brilliantly. It gets a lot of compliments when people first see it. The inlays are awesome. It certainly makes me look different to everybody else out there too. Even people that know nothing about guitars can tell that they are looking at something pretty special.
This is a thread about unusual equipment. I think I qualify.

The ugliness I was speaking of was mostly due to the bridge pickup in tandem with the neck, the awkward edge on the bottom, the reverse headstock (I don't like those...) and this might be the lighting, but the way it looks neck-thru with two flame maple wings on it.

However, the finish and inlays are definitely pretty gorgeous.

The design idea was intended to be assymetrical. The way that the birdseye neck through piece (you can't see it in the photo but the birdseye figuring is phenomenal) splits the two halves adds to the assymetrical effect. I guess either you like assymetrical things or you don't.
The reverse headstock is part of that too. It is angled up to the big half of the guitar. When I drew it with a standard headstock it looked all wrong.

That's what it is...I am not one for asymmetry...I refuse to buy a guitar that has an asymmetrical headstock, although I like Les Pauls because the cutaway's asymmetry doesn't bother me. Oddly enough, my dream guitar is a Gibson Flying V, which is probably one of the more symmetrical guitars out there.

You basically designed your guitar so that I will never steal it...

seriously, though, I really like the finish. If I were in Australia, I would venture out into the outside (something I hear isn't ever a good idea there) and transport my ass to wherever you have that, just to see it's true beauty. One thing I HATE about guitars is that they never look true in pictures. For example, before I purchased my Les Paul, I wanted either a Trans Blue standard or an Ebony or Ivory Custom. I hated the look of all of the burst guitars. Every single one, especially the Cherry bursts. Then, I went to the closest guitar store that stocked Gibson near me and tried some in person. The blue one looked pretty, but the Cherry burst one seduced me like a goddamn vampire siren. I fell straight in love with it and refused any other finish. It looked nothing in pictures like it did in person. Considering how good that one looks in a picture, I really want to see it with my own eyes.

Well, you wanted unusual.

Btw, the neck pup (EMG SA) was angled that way for reasons of aesthetics but it turned out to be a happy accident because it sounds magnificent. I was a bit worried that it wouldn't work (which was a big gamble for me seeing as how it wasn't a cheap guitar to have built) but it worked incredibly well. Symmetry is overrated.

The guy that built it is one of the best arch top mandolin luthiers in the world. You should see some of his expensive mandolins. They are works of art. Incredible dude. He's a real olde worlde craftsman.
He doesn't normally make electric guitars. He makes one off electrics in between batches of mandolins for people in the know that ask him. I played one of his strats which was also a neck through and I couldn't believe how much better it was than any strat I'd ever played. After playing that I just had to have something made by him. I wasn't dissapointed.
