You don't need a stack for playing in your bedroom.

Doesn't look like this one's coming back, way to go there Ian buddy.

Yeah, but it doesn't hurt to point out that a stack isn't always an optimal solution, in case TS doesn't have a clue about amps and cabinets. Of course the way Ian did it isn't very helpful.

And I still gave a suggestion to check out a used 5150 212 which is arguably the best choice for his budget. So it's not like my post was a complete waste of server space.

It certainly kills the "I need a halfstack" attitude a lot quicker.
I don't know what is worse, being a complete douche to the TS for wanting a halfstack, or trying to legitimize your own halfstack because you... "need the projection".

Quite right!

'Bedroom Levels' are dependent on the bedroom in question...

Tangentially, this reminds me of an interview with Bruce Willis some years ago where he said something along the lines of the following. He had just bought a house, and was talking about a fantasy conversation with his new neighbors...

"Oh Hi Bruce, what are those structures at the bottom of the canyon there, guest houses?"

"No, they ain't guest houses!"

"What are they then?"

"Speakers!"

Before we all tell him to get a combo because stacks are for posers, let's remember that heads are much more practical for gigs. Promoters like people with heads because one local band/the venue can provide the cabs, and the sound guy can just leave his mics on them, therefore saving time and space. If you have a half stack, you can provide your cab at local gigs, and only have to lug a light bit of gear out of town.

And with a $20 cable, one can plug their combo into these venue-owned pre-mic'd cabs....

I'm not sure the 'practicality' advantage is as great as you imply?

I own a ghetto half stack, an ampeg v50h and a chopped randall rg200g3. I watched a few videos and it the rx120 actually sound pretty good (personally I rather have it than a 6505) but the 6505 will get him the sound he is after much better.

Immature responses notwithstanding, I too once fell for the allure of the cheap half-stack. But it wasn't all in vain. You can always sell your shitty amp head and get a good one. They are useful when gigging depending on the venue.

Depending on the size of the venue you won't need to mic the thing. One of my friends has been doing sound for 12 years or so, he places half-stacks behing the drums believing it "pushes out" the sound of the drums which are themselves also mic'd. It sounds hokey but seems to work.

Plus, never count out the "wow" factor. If you think music should be all substance and no style you're probably not going to be successful.

But one can certainly make due with a combo, especially when recording.

Check out the Bugera 6260 and 6262. Also Dime cabinets are awesome they play real nice with low tunings. Combos are really heavy(weight not sound) and lack low end, keep that in mind.

Take your guitar down to a music shop and try some. Only way to get what you want.

Ian doesn't know the difference between a light bulb and a tube. He really isn't worth listening to.

Maybe a Peavey Vypyr Tube head? if you really want a stack. I'd suggest you the combo with an amp stand though - makes projecting much easier.

What my friend did is went into GC with $800 for a halfstack (yes, for projection *geezus*) and walked out with a used JSX and a used MG412.

He threw crossed V30s and G12s in it later, and it really sounds good without paying much money or having to build one himself.

this is just old and stupid.

ian was that really necessary?

i have 5 4x12"'s and 2x12"s and 2 1x12" i need to finish the 1x12s though so technically in use now.

i have two combos. a 1x12" and a 2x12"

i play out and i play my gear, whatever i need or want to use.

i can play any of my amps with a 4x12" any time of day some of them allot for lower volumes so i can play throughout the night and while not ideal, the Dual Terror doesn't sound that bad.

there is nothing with wanting a 4x12" he may grow later and get tired of hauling it, and buy a 2x12" but thats his deal.

ian- weren't the one with the light bulb tube theory? (i apologize if it was somebody else) remember that you didn't know anything as a new player either.
