Secondhand amps

Lately I've been searching for a Spider IV amp. I think it will be a good one for me. Recently I found one secondhand I can get for 60EUR. But is this recommend? I can visit the guy and try it, but are there specific things I should look into?

make sure it works and sounds good. look for broken or missing parts and other signs of abuse. that's about all you can do. i'll assume for that price you're talking about a low end amp and solid state. if no bad buzzes or other undesireable noises plus it all works then you're good to go. oh and make sure it gives you the sound you want (within reason for that price)

It will do what you want - if you're playing at extremely low volumes with super high gain.

It would help us if you filled out that form that Ian suggested.

Pretty soon that amp will sound like garbage to you. It isn't a wise investment.

For that price, it will be hard to do much better, you can fill out that form if you want to, see if you can get something better, but really for 60 bucks I imagine the only other things you could get would be a peavey vypyr or maybe a fender mustang, and at the sizes they would be available they really won't be too much of an improvement. Monwobbobo had sound advice on what to look for.

60 Euros....what do you think you're going to suggest?

Budget: say.. not much more than a 100 euros. Could exceed a few.
Genres: hardrock and mostly metal.
New or used: doesn't really matter if the condition is still good.
Home or gig: purely home. My room.
Nearest city: Rotterdam
Current gear: Squier Strat + some random old 100w Elka keyboard amp.

I'm relatively new to guitarplaying, but I just want an actual guitar amp with some decent distortion/drive etc. and the Spider IV has been recommended quite a lot for its price.

I made the mistake several months ago of getting a used Spider III 75 watt combo. It turned out to be one of the worst amps I ever had in my 40 years of playing. After 2 weeks, I bought it to Guitar Center and ended up doing a swap to them for my Crate GX-80 which has a Celestion V-12 built into it and is also USA made. At least that's a dependable and much better sounding amp.

You do know that that thread was never meant to be a catch all for gear advice. And that you're not an advice columnist.

At least that's what I'm assuming.
