Hey guys and gals, finally in a position to enter this challenge (moving islands set me back for a while, but I'm back and raring to go). The plan: a Jag-Strat hybrid:
![]() I found a real cheap-and-nasty strat on one of these daily-deal websites, managed to get most of the parts I need from a $63 rig. So, the cost breakdown (in NZD): $30.00 Ash (for body) $25.50 Maple Neck Blank $17.30 18" Truss Rod $17.00 Maple 25.5" Fretboard $ 4.00 Fretwire $10.00w/b/w Laminate Pickguard Matl. $16.00 DPDT Slide Switches $63.00 Sacrificial Guitar, including 6-in-line Tuning Machines String Tree Nut Tremolo Bridge Single-Coil Pickups 5-Way Selector Switch 250k Pots Caps 1/4" Mono Jack Strap Locks Neck Plate and Screws Which comes to a grand total of $183.50 The exchange rate at time of posting puts the limit at $196.30 Still waiting on the Stew-Mac parts to arrive, but here's what I've got at the moment: ![]() Next week: Templates!

I know, I consider myself something of a high roller
![]() Probably looking at Candy Apple Red, depending on what paint I can find locally (air-shipping regulations on aerosol cans are a real bastard).

Dig an underground tunnel that's slops slightly towards your end and have them roll cans to you through that.

Hmm, that could work. Might blow my 100 GBP budget though

If you haven't already cut it, a 70s style headstock would look pretty awesome.

Not such a fan of the 70's style to be honest - it would be more true to the Jag though I guess. I'm going with the 60's style for this one, more of a traditional strat style.

Neck rough-cut to shape:
![]() A bit of really crude thicknessing (I couldn't be bothered making up a new router sledge, so just did it in blocks and took the walls out with a chisel): ![]() Neck routed to shape, and truss rod glued in: ![]() And fretboard glued on top: ![]() Skipped a couple of steps here in my haste, but the body routed (neck still needs the fretboard trimming): ![]() Tomorrow, weather permitting, it'll be onto the arm and belly cuts.

Two steps forward, one step back... First things first, I got the arm and belly cuts done with the spokeshave and orbital sander (A little hard to make out in the light though):
![]() Then, routing the edge radius, disaster strikes! Turns out I bought a bead bit instead of a classic roundover - the results were not ideal: ![]() Time to stop, take a deep breath, and relax before I make any more sawdust: ![]()

just do the whole top like that, and paint the top + the roundover one color, then paint the ledge and the back another colour. it would look awesome.
like, candy red top, with a white ledge and back. like some crazy jag/strat/airline crossover.

Psssh! That would be a wimpy roundover anyhow. Offsets have nice big roundovers. Go grab a nice big roundover and continue! Or just go around all the way.

Yeah that's the plan, I'll put a big sucker on to cut out most of it, then if needed just fill in the remaining line before painting. Got a 1/2" round bit en route now.

You could use a large roundover bit, but small enough that it doesn't take out the whole ledge. That way it'll be like there's a little channel left which could be filled with something, and you could do a stain finish and you'd have a nice little border around the face.

You could adjust it a little higher and there wouldn't be a channel like that.
That's what I do to get the round over look with a bead bit. |

I'm not sure that would work - the bearing is stepped in, so while raising it up would stop beading on the top surface, it would still bite on the side (exhibit A above
)
