Ideas for Pedals
I am thinking of buying a set of pedals, can anyone suggest what pedal is best to start with if one is interested in metal?

After you answer THAT question and tell us your budget, we can give you concrete suggestions without overwhelming you.
Because Metal guitarists use a pretty vast array of pedals, depending on genre. Fuzzes, Distortions, Overdrives & Wahs are pretty common throughout, though. There are inexpensive, compact single effects vs larger stompboxes with more flexibility that cost more; cheapies that deliver bang for the buck vs high dollar effects that don't deliver significant improvements over them, and so forth. Hell- some people just use a multi-FX pedal or a modeling amp.

You'll get the most mileage out of an EQ. The MXR M108 is really nice.
