NAD Marshall madness - DSL1
The latest in the 50th anniversary amps are now shipping - I received my DSL1 today!
First impressions are very positive, it sounds very good at low volume and superb when cranked - very usable tone for the home The power reduction button works as you'd expect it to, it brings down the volume to TV levels that I would imagine people living close to neighbours in apartments etc will find handy, and it still sounds good. Cranked this amp roars while not destroying your hearing. The clean channels cleans up nicely as you back off the pre-gain and warms up as you wind it up. Comparing it to my JVM I'd say it was less sterile, warmer with richer dynamics. The ultra channel is good - although there isn't quite as much gain as I was used tomon od orange and red on the JVM. Crank the gain and it's instant Maiden. With an OD up front you can unleash the middle aged teenager within and it'll do early Metallica or Thrash of your choice. The eq is responsive although I haven't used the Deep or Shift buttons much so can't really comment on them. It seems to take pedals well, the FX loop works very well with My Nova and overall noise is very low. With just the nova and mxr eq in the loop and the 808 up front it needs no noise gate - add more pedals to the fromt though and the noise does start to increase. Build quality seems pretty good - on a par with my JVM. Overall I am one seriously happy chappy - thanks for reading - I had to tell someone as the missus isn't interested ![]() |

WTF is with no one posting pics today?
I'm not sure if I'd want a 1W DSL. Any of the older Marshalls sure, that's a no brainer, but one of the biggest aspects of the DSL is the fact that it has a clean channel...

Hey...I posted a pic - it just took me a while to do it
![]() Of course the DSL or JVM isn't as niche as the older amps and doesn't have the kudos but why would I buy an amp just because of that? Surely i should be buying it for the sound I want rather than some bygones past reason? I'm not knocking other folks choices for amps here but for me I'd take a DSL or JVM over a JMP/JCM etc even if it were sprinkled in unicorn dust and a lifetimes free supply of Hendrix jizz |

...hmmm, i could clone me a hendrix with some hendrix jizz. i could clone a few, see if jimi would have been just as good on bass or harmonica. i'd like to play one of these amps. it's interesting they did a DSL 1 watter for the anniversary and also released a new DSL line

Very nice!! I'm going to be picking up a JCM1 as soon as my Dsl50 sells. I love the Dsl alot, they're very versatile. I'd love to have both the JCM1 and the DSL1. Maybe one day!

Sweet man. I love my big DSL. But as said, one of my favorite parts is the clean channel. But HNDSLD!

I've already got you the one for your mantle. ![]() These are a cute little curio. Bit pricey but if you have the money to burn, a fine little toy. I would have gone with one of the plexis though or the 800. I was hoping for something more amazing for their 50th though. Where's the solid gold (or plated even) Marshall Major? Now that would be a suitable 50th anniversary. Or an amp with a plexi channel and an 800 channel - and real, not simulated. Yes, 311. A Splawn. ![]()

So I've had a weekend playing with the little Marshall now and can confirm that I haven't yet found the battery compartment - perhaps its powered by solar or from the electric field generated by my chuffedness
Comparing this to the JVM there is obviously less gain, but where the biggest difference is for the bedroom ninja such as myself is in usability. The JVM has an excellent master volume but the DSL just seems to sound a lot richer and fuller at louder household volumes than the JVM. The JVM at what feels the same volume seems to pack more punch and be more anti social while not quite having the same harmonic content. I'm not sure whether this is a JVM v DSL thing or whether it is a low wattage valve being driven v bigger amp with a good MV. I hope that's makes sense...? I had planned on selling the JVM but am not sure I will. I'm certainly very happy with the DSL but think I'll keep hold of the JVM for sometime to come while I continue to get to know this superb little amp. Awesome tone at housefriendly volumes ![]() |
