Recommend me an Amp (Head plus Cab)

Hey guys!

I want to upgrade my amp so that i can actually sound good when jamming with drums. I currently have a Laney TF300 combo.

Now my budget is around $3500 NZD. Will be buying from rockshop.co.nz

I am after an amp that will have me sorted and not wanting an upgrade in a few years time. I play mainly metal. e.g. Metallica, Pantera, Down, Lamb of God and Lazarus A.D. are the main ones, although I do enjoy the likes of Neil Young, Skynyrd, Alice in Chains etc. I am currently working with my band to make our first bunch of songs and we have a few down so far.

So basically it needs to be awesome for metal. The more versatile the better. The amp i have been looking at is the JVM210H and 1960A cab. I would love to hear your thoughts and recommendations.

Thanks

Mesa Boogie Mark V. it'll nail the metal tones you want and is versatile enough for blues, rock'n'roll.

Alice in Chains is pretty easy to do with a Mark V as well.
Although, they're probably pretty pricey down there.

Send me $1300 and i will send you an Engl Screamer 50 head then spend the rest on a re tube and a nice cab. Get one with V30's in it because you will need those mids with the screamer.

PM me if you are interested. but just let me know you have pm'ed.

A Mark V will be out of his price range unless he can find an old beat up one. Not much chance of that, who mistreats a $5000 amp?

A 6505 is probably your best bet - either that or Joe's Screamer.

Try to find a used Mesa Mark IV? Not sure about prices or how good your used market is.

Otherwise, the Marshall JVM may be your best bet given what's available.

If you like the Laney sound the new Ironhearts are great! I have one and it probably the best metal amp i've tried plus it's got an outstanding good clean sound

Hey thanks for all the replies! Would love a mark V but its a bit out of my price range @ $4399 for the head alone. Ill keep an eye out for a second hand one though.

ENGL screamer would be cool if I could get a hold of one, but will be a great challenge in New Zealand.

Another big question I have. How is the 205H compared to the 210H. I know ones 50W and the other 100w but will i need the extra 50W? I have never owned a tube amp before.

This.

Also if you're willing to pay from Australia since I noticed "rockshop" doesn't stock Peavey..

How about a Mesa Mini Rec - They're like 1700 NZD new, or slash-ed on Nzguitars forum had one on trademe a while ago for 1200, but it probs got sold.

They have sexy tones.

Hmm but wouldn't the mini rec be too small? Only 25w. I'm after something i could potentially gig with too.

Been checking out some youtube vids of the 6505 and it sounds awesome. Such a shame i would have to source one from overseas. Could be worth doing though.

On the cab side of things... Are Vintage 30s meant to be the best?

Not necessarily "best." Speakers come down to personal preference.

Lol "only 25 watts".

Go and freaking play one. Its like, dual rec, in your hands.

Also a used dual rec. they usually go for about 2k on trademe, unsure of new price because I'm poor.

Why so hesitant about buying from Aus? NZ is closer than the west coast of the same country.

5153 100 watt. Will nail it all. Sounds much better and more dynamic than a MK V in my opinion.
3 channels, switchable loop.

5150 IIIs new are about 3.5k here, which leaves no budget for a cab, unless he gets a WANGS cab with 4 celestion seventy80 speakers off trademe made by biyang.

You can gig with the Mini Rectifier but I don't think it's your best option. I'll try that JVM as Offworld said.
