Zombies Ate My Neighbors for SNES. Highly underrated. Definitely a game to play before you die.

If we can be selective about games, then yeah, Mario is definitely high up on the list. I don't think 2 is as good as 3, or even close to it, but then just having 3 at all is great. The problem is, the American 2 isn't even the real 2, so does it even count?

Anyways, point is, Mario Kart is a series I will add to this list.

Also Super Smash Bros.

Okay let me clarify my statement.

I said at least THROUGH Yoshi's Island, not TO it

I was suggesting what came after was questionable. While I don't think it's the best in the series, I do like it quite a bit.

I'd also like to go ahead and throw Street Fighter on this list.

It was near perfect. The graphics were beautiful and colorful, the music was amazing, the levels did a great job of introducing themes that would reappear later, the difficulty was very linear and fair, but challenging, the points system served as a great reward system, and honestly the most hated aspect of the game is one of its stand-out points to me.

Every time you get hit, Mario flies off your back and starts crying loudly and obnoxiously. It's really well designed, honestly, because it makes you very anxious and never wanting to take a hit. It's a perfect punishment for getting hit.

Yoshi's Island is fantastic. I actually found my DS today and started playing the sequel on there a bit.

Yeah that's true. A lot of games you think "nah, I'll try this, because I have an extra hit". With this, it's different. The game changes completely once you lose Mario. It goes from "get to the end" to being "get that fucking kid back!", and not only is it loud and irritating, it also takes you further away from your initial goal often enough.

And since you can collect the stars to give you more time to retrieve him, you want to get hit even less because there are only so many stars in each level and to get a perfect score you need 30 seconds.

+1 for Shining Force I&II, turn based RPG doesn't get simpler than this but it's so much fun.

Also, I think I said this in a similar thread, the Star Wars trilogy for NES (or maybe it's SNES) are some of the best platforms I've played.

Exactly.
That's an example of taking a game concept, spinning it off into a very different style of game (it's still a platformer but it's still very different), and doing so with great ease. That game's the reason why Yoshi is such a loved character. He was given the dignity and respect he deserved, especially since he was a character we came to know and like from before (this only strengthened his importance).

Yoshi's Island, Quake III Arena, Ocarina of Time. **** Goldeneye, it was fun, but didn't do anything amazing, imo.

This, though if you didn't play it when you were younger and tried playing it now, you'd probably miss out on why it was considered revolutionary. Though tbh I never owned the game.

Yeah that's also true. If you weren't experiencing the shift in FPS gameplay as a kid, I guess you never will. Everybody and their dog's testicles had that game and were blown away by it. It does look pretty bad now, but it's still extremely fun. Unlike HG/SS, I don't think the Wii remake (lol wiimake, don't kill me) does the original game justice, and the new one looks a billion times better. Better graphics do not equate to a better game.

There's an important distinction to make between a game being good and a game being good for its day. Goldeneye is the latter. For a console shooter of its day it was revolutionary, but by today's standards it's nigh-unplayable. Compare that to Super Metroid or Mega Man II, both of whih have aged fantastically.

I know, but it doing amazing things for its time is what I'm getting at. The OP said it didn't do anything amazing yet it was fun. I'm saying that it may or may not have been fun depending on the player, but it still did amazing things.
