Do Multi-Guitarist Bands ony use the same brand?
(hope this is the right forum)
I recently noticed that many bands with multiple guitarists feature having guitars from the same brand. Some examples: HammerFall: Jackson AC/DC: Gibson Scorpions: Gibson DragonForce: Ibanez Guns n Roses: Gibson Does this have some particular reason? I was just wondering because I started playing in a band recently and I play on an Ibanez while the other guitarist plays a Gibson. |

That tends to happen when both guitarists are offered a package endorsement deal, but it's not a requirement that you both play the same brand guitars. It's usually a band-by-band thing.

It's not something I've ever thought of. I don't think Malcolm Young uses Gibsons though, and Bumblefoot with Guns N Roses doesn't use Gibsons as far as I've seen.
I suppose it would be something to do with the fact that they both have guitars that suits their playing style and tone, as well as what the guy above me said Last edited by justaginger : 09-26-2012 at 05:31 PM. |

In my band, I play a PRS and the other guy has a Les Paul and our third guitarist/keyboardist/tech has a Blacktop Strat.
The answer to your question - no, not always. Some do in order to have similar tone. |

This. For example both Avenged Sevenfold guitarists are endorsed by Schecter and have their own signature models. |

As a matter of fact all guitarrists from both AC/DC and Guns N Rose prefer to play Gibsons live, though they play different guitars on their albums, don't they?

To answer your question, some smaller time bands can get a deal if they buy in bulk or agree to only use "X" brand's gear. But mostly bands who all rock the same gear are either trying to cop an image or have a very narrow scope of sound, IMO.
But to clear up a few tother things, the Scorpions actually endorse a German company called Dommenget guitars. And the guys in GNR use all kinds of guitars, even back in the day. Axl actually makes the dudes get a Les Paul when they join the group to get closer to the old Guns sound, or something like that. Bumblefoot endorses Vigier guitars, and only started using Les Pauls when he joined GNR. Quote:
As a matter of fact, Malcom young uses, and has used Gretsch guitars, for years. Slash has played all kinds of guitars like BC Rich mockingbirds, Travis Beans for slide and Guild guitars for acoustic stuff, both live and in the studio. They all use different gear at different times to get a different sounds and textures appropriate for the song. There is no perfect, all encompassing guitar that will do everything perfectly, so you need to have a few specialty guitars handy for something that really stands out. Lamb of God uses ESP and Jackson.
Iron Maiden uses Gibson, Fender, and Jackson. Black Label Society uses Gibson and PRS. Machine Head uses Jackson and Epiphone. Slipknot uses Ibanez and Fender. So no they don't have to exclusively play the same brands.

I agree with everything except this. I think comfort, playability, and availability tend to come before copping an image. Besides that, the guitar makes very little difference in sound beyond the coil count and the output of the pickups.

Actually, Bumblefoot has a '59 reissue Les Paul, which he even used for most of the set in 2006, but nowadays doesn't play it too much.

Sometimes guitar manufacturers sponsor multi-guitar bands so they'll use those guitars during performances for the public to see, much like how auto racing teams get support from car manufacturers. However, if this isn't the case, usually the guitarists just use what they prefer and if they use the same brand it's usually coincidence in tastes. For example, Joe Perry and Brad Whitford of Aerosmith signed a deal with B.C. Rich in the 80's so they almost always used B.C. Rich guitars in public, but after the contract ended they mixed and matched guitars and still do. Joe might play a Strat while Brad plays a Les Paul.

Rudolph Schenker has used Fender Strats, Gibson V's, and Dean V's live and in studio, whereas Matthias has used Fender Strats and Gibson Explorers. Both of them also use guitars made by a custom guitar-maker by the name of Boris Dommenget. So they are not exclusive Gibson users
