The people who live there.

Basically, when slavery ended lots of black people in Brazil moved from the countryside to the cities and didn't have anywhere to stay, and the government certainly didn't care where they stayed, so they constructed their own shacks on hills overlooking the cities. As generations passed they expanded in a completely ad hoc manner with no oversight or regulation because the government still didn't care, setting up their own water and electrical systems and everything. And that's where favelas come from.

In my area you can find a pretty darn decent house for less than that. Depends on where you live.

EDIT: I see you're from Toronto. That's why you think it's cheap. I live in Welland (couple hours from Toronto). In a big city, yea it's not much for a house. In a small town you can find an amazing house for that. Toronto is an over priced shithole (no offense intended to you, just the horrible city).

Show me a decent house, in a decent neighbourhood, for 160 grand. Calling BS.

edit: I'm from Burlington, and I grew up in a very modest house in a good neighbourhood. Our neighbours just recently sold their house for ~$500,000 IIRC. Can't think of very many houses I've even heard of selling for $160,000 and I'm from the suburbs.

I live in a two story house, central air, just renovated, 3 car garage, in ground swimming pool, about 1.5-2 acres (it's in the city, so not that big) and I (yes I, not my parents) pay $130,000 to live here. It's in the upper class area of my city. My city is a huge shithole, so that's not saying much, but this is where the upper class live. Grocery store down the street. Tim Hortons too.

You just have to take buying a house very very slow, wait and be patient and you can pretty much always find a great house.

Burlington is a richer city, I think. I don't think you've been to Welland. It's similar to Niagara Falls (where I also used to live) as a shithole, except Welland is worse. Like I said man, it depends where you live. I can go to Fort Erie and buy a $500,000 house too, or I could go to Owen Sound and buy a 10 acre house for $150,000.

Location, location, location.


EDIT: That's the issue - you're from the suburbs, dude. Expensive to live there.

well, i didnt realise the difference between your area and mine was that great. I was thinking of the house prices I know even in like Grimsby and I figured they were more, granted idk much about housing which i suppose comes through. thats just like, damn cheap tho. im surprised haha. i mean thats like what my dad makes in a year jeez props to your parents from the sounds of it i guess


ya burlington is essentially oakville part II, but i didnt think the difference was that great. because even like grimsby, brampton, sauga, like any city i think of i am unaware of houses that cheap. who knew welland had such cheap housing

46 minutes to get to union on the dot! sometimes faster if they get those express trains where they skip stops

protip from the suburbs gotta haul ass to the 2nd floor go train thingiemabobber and get the one seat right beside where the stairs to the 3rd little seating floor is. you get like a 2 seat lane and a 3rd horizontal seat so when its busy you can put your feet up and nobody bitches cuz nobody wants the other spots and nobody sits beside you. file that away you may be thanking thrashtastic with your feet up one day and no obese coughing ppl beside you trying to make smalltalk w/ ya when you are trying to read or do stuff on your phone

^ for young'uns like us its all the hustle n bustle. nightlife and all that jazz. torontos pretty safe for a big city, lots to do. the suburbs are nice, but they get pretty boring. its for when you're older and want to settle down and start a family w/ the wife and all that stuff.

Like I said, though, you got to live in a crappy city if you want a cheap house. Oakville, Grimsby, Burlington are not particularily rich cities (like middle-upper class), but look at houses in Welland, Niagara Falls, St Catherines, Hamilton even. All poor as shit shithole towns, and as a result all the living is cheap too.

Hell, I've seen entire houses (granted, they're small properties, and small houses) go for $50,000 here.
