Crescendos.

The grunt before heavy riff thing, if done correctly.

Clean intros.

Drum fills.

Brushes in jazz.

Reprising a riff later in the song with a slightly different feel.

4/4 beats. Especially when they are used for build up.

It's not really a musical gimmick, more a performance gimmick, but I love it when bands incorporate visuals and shit into live performances.

Best gimmick is probably the '90s pop punk guitar jump.

Has nothing to do with the music but band t-shirts. Especially concert tees.

When everything is silence and you are waiting for the next song, suddenly BAM.
And lots of upbeat thing-y.

this minor ii-V sub where you sub the ii by throwing another third underneath, play the 3-5-7-9 of the dominant and end on the minor chord.

essentially if you had a ii-V in Cm it'd become a Bb7 - Bm7b5 - Cm7. so you get that chromatic walkup.

happens at :18. i heard some tune by some popular new dude and he totally lifted that exact lick too. but i'd imagine it's in a ton of places.

also, i'm compiling instances of what i deem "the lick 2". once you learn it you'll hear it everywhere.

I can see how certain chord progressions and harmonic textures can be cliche, but I don't see how something like that could be gimmicky.

That reminds me. Chinas on the offbeat. Chinas. On the motherfucking. Offbeat.

Also that 3-over-4 thing on the hi-hat or splash which bands like PT and Katatonia do.

Half-timing the last chorus to make it more emotional.

This.

Also, having the snare on 2 and 4 for a phrase and then switching it to 3 over the same riff or vice versa.

i know what you mean, but i feel like it's gimmicky if that harmony is used to say overtly "this is me doing this genre".

fade outs.

As in EPIC fade outs. It's kind of a cheap and easy way of ending a song, but it can sound good.

I like that too.

I like when a song cuts out at a noisy point and it's just acoustic for a bit, then kicks back in.
