lately i've noticed that modern rock and just rock music in general is kinda not as popular as it used to be. i know that things change an so do people's taste in music or maybe its just the area i live in rock isn't liked alot, but could rock be dying? is it gonna get popular again later? what do you think

Depends what you classify as 'rock'.

The media would have you believe that Florence and the Machine are classed as a rock act. They're clearly not, but thats marketing.

In a way, but ultimately its whatever the general population start calling it, unchallenged democracy and all that. Rock and especially metal, isn't something that'll just die off suddenly, and any underground band will still provide hope.

Gone are the days when you heard new music from the radio or from people you know. The way I see it now is that the internet has allowed many more people's music to be heard, although the expense is that "popular" artists aren't as popular.

Rock music has deteriorated in the past 15 years or so IMO. Most of the great guitar based music lately has been from indie bands. I can't think of a single straightforward "rock" album in the past 15 years that comes close to Radiohead's Ok Computer.

And Songs for the Deaf, but I mostly agree with the post. All the cool stuff is happening outside of the modern rock world. That said, plenty new rock bands just get the indie label stamped on them, giving us the impression rock is deader than it is.

Most things that are classed as Indie these days is really just Brit Pop.

Rock is not dead. If anything, rock is simply developing; we've had the 20th century rock music, like the Beatles, etc. but now rock is not as popular with as many people because of the new style of 'music' - rap, etc. All rock needs is a boost, and I'm not talking about collaborations between rock and rap/r'n'b/hip hop, etc. (like Brian May and Dappy...).

In some case you're right. Modern rock isn't so popular today but I think it will return after few years. Because fashion never goes away, it just changes periodically

Rock is definitely in a prolonged rut like 1960-1963 before the british invasion gave it life again after that pop stuff took over.

But there's a ton of stuff out there not on the radio that's excellent. Thank you internet.

Theres brilliant rock out there, even though the media would have you believe 'rock is dead'. These days, you'd be hard pressed to find much rock on mainstream television and radio other than your foo Fighters and Nickelback etc. To find good music now, you have to search yourself which is what I have started doing. And man, there is some brilliant stuff out there. Have a listen to Tame Impala's Lonerism, now there is a good contemporary rock album.
