Costs aren't important if it's below 10k per year. It's a problem since it's 25k ![]()

I actually spent a weekend at Exeter Uni like a month ago because my girlfriend went to an open day. It really is a great school, a member of the Russell Group which are the most prestigious English Universities, and you're 10 minutes away from the beach. Not that the beach would swing it but it really is a lovely school and I wouldn't discount it completely. |

Thing is that I don't see a way to get the money in the first place, paying back won't be a problem anyway (I hope). Did no one else ever get into a situation like this?

you can get the money from private loans if you have to. They don't even have to be loans from UK institutions, I'm sure you could get a loan from another country if you had to.

Huh, college must be a lot cheaper in Europe. That work out to a pretty average tuition for the US, maybe a little on the upper end.

Is that with or without living costs? In my home country I pay 1600 euros per year, so can't say I have many local opportunities to borrow 25k. College is a lot cheaper though, yeah.

about 7k of that is usually the room to live in. I live in town anyway so I saved on room and board. Also, scholarship.

Even then: 29k is a damn lot. On what do they spend that? I know that without government subsidies I would have to pay 9k a year, still that's no where near what you guys pay. I have a feeling that mainly goes to profits, sport teams etc. in your USA system.

Really upper end schools like Caltech or MIT have tuitions around $38,000 a year, cost of living being at around $56,000. (I just looked this up on the Caltech website, not just making numbers up.) Granted cost of living estimates are usually way higher than they need to be for some reason.
I'm lucky enough to go to a school where my tuition is payed for by the state, and the college offers great scholarships because of all of its connections to the mining and petroleum industries. I'm actually getting $1,000 back per semester, but I did work my butt of in highschool to earn those scholarships.

Same here, i know that university fees have skyrocketed, but i didn't know some places were that much. LSE is pretty prestigious though, and it might be expensive because it is a year long course. I would say go to Exeter, or Germany, even though i live in London and love it, that kind of money is ludicrous.

Yeah and I couldn't do the course because of it. Your only options are to go on FunderFinder or apply for a scholarship. If you are an exceptional candidate, and as you are planning a Ph.D. anyway, you could apply to work at the university in exchange for fees. I know a lot of people who do this - running seminars for undergraduates as a 'teaching assistant' typed role for minimum wage. That might be useful? You could also try applying to large firms and see if you could sign some kind of contract where they would pay your fees in return for a one or two year working contract with them. |

I've never been to either, and it depends where you're thinking of going in Germany. I would imagine Exeter to be quite rural, not sure if that bothers you or not. Having said that, if you really want to go to LSE, contact them, and you might be able to make some kind of arrangement in order to make the fees a bit easier to deal with.

Why would you not get a career? If you stay in England a degree from Exeter would be very fucking handy. |

Frankfurt Göthe University - doing the MSc Quantitative Economics from the Erasmus group. Could start my PhD in the second year, but there is overlap in the first 6 months in courses as I already have a MSc then. Exeter would be MPhil - 2 years of research followed by PhD - another 3 years of research. LSE would be 1 year classes 1 year research followed by Phd. It's a bloody difficult choice damnit. Would have been easier if some of the top 4-9 universities in England offered programs that would suit my needs.
