Oh look, a thread about music genres!!!1!
Alright Pit. Level with me here, because I'm sure you've heard a lot of this jive talk before. Take a look at the current genres and their names.
My question is: in the future, as music continues to develop, will genres like Classic Rock constantly be expanding due to more and more sounds becoming "outdated"? Or will the music retain its specific genre name? It's not so confusing until you look at something like Modern Rock. What does that entail? Will we just keep moving music out of that genre as it becomes older and new styles take the forefront? Or does that genre name refer to a specific style that will never change? I believe genres like Classic Rock describe a certain sound, and technically there can be new "Classic" bands. However, when it comes to Modern Rock, I'm stumped. It tends to be much more general. What do you guys think?

25 years ago, metal was long-haired, leather/spandex-clad men with ranges the size of Texas singing emotional ballads followed by arena-rocking anthems.
Today, it's a bunch of gruff-looking dudes with unnecessarily downtuned guitars making engine sounds with their throats. Honestly, I never liked having Motley Crue and Cannibal Corpse in the same category. To me, IMO, it's like putting Charlie Parker in the same category as Stevie Wonder.

I think modern rock will be called whatever they fit into the most once "modern" no longer seems true and classic rock will probably generally just stay 60s-80s rock. So like in 20 years QotSA will be called "stoner rock" or something more fitting instead of modern.

There's too many genres as it is now. People aren't going to be happy until every band is listed as a different genre.

And they both sound just as shit. OT: Just give them their proper names. AC/DC, KISS, Whatever else like that: Hard Rock Nickelback, SHinedown, whatever else like that: Hard Rock Yes, Jethro Tull, whatever else like that: Progressive Rock Tool, Astra, whatever else like that: Progressive Rock And just do that to them all. Classic Rock and Modern Rock aren't actual genres. |
