I need tubes.
My Laney started giving me problems on the power tubes (microphonics). These are the best ones available around my area. Which ones should I choose and why?

$320 for JJ's???
Somebody's been putting LSD in their water. The British ones are probably Mullards but I can't see them good enough to be certain but I'd say Mullards. Damn good tubes but for $750? Give me a break. Phillips are a fantastic tube, they owned Mullard. But for $850 it had better well mow the ****ing lawn too. Just buy normal JJ EL84's. They are a fine tube and they are cheap.

^ That looks like it's in Peso's, so the prices aren't that bad.
I'd just grab the JJ's as well, cheap and reliable in my experience. |

He's in Mexico, Cath. 320 pesos is about $25 USD.
However, I'd be concerned about proper testing and matching. The prices don't seem bad but I can't say with any certainty whether those vendors actually do anything with their tubes to make sure you get a working, matched pair. A lot of places (Guitar Center, most eBay sellers) just toss a pair in a box and send them off. KCANOSTubes.com, tubedepot.com, and thetubestore.com all ship to Mexico and will get you a properly tested and matched set for about the same price. I'd suggest using those, but the vendors on the original post don't seem awful either. Given the average life of an EL84 I'd stick with JJ.

Oh, ok. That's different. I'd take a punt on the pommy ones myself then if I had the money, otherwise the JJ's. JJ are the only modern EL84 worth pissing on.

Also check with www.dougstubes.com on whether or not he ships to Mexico. I believe he does. He has an October special right now that if you spend more than $150 you get a free phase inverter tube. I believe he gets his JJ EL84s from Ruby now pretested and rebranded Ruby.

Well, then it will be worth to get more tubes, maybe some spares for my Mesa too? Recommendations gentlemen? My RA runs 6x12ax7s, 1x12at7s and 4xEL34s, my Laney needs two 3x12ax7s and 2xEL84s. BTW, I already have two GE 12at7s and three 12ax7s.

The best EL34's are SED =C= but they are expensive. JJ follow behind that. There are two types; EL34 and EL34L. The EL34L are the more modern EL34, they have a bigger bottom end.
Your best bet for good NOS preamp tubes are probably RCA or GE. Take RCA if you have the choice. I'd go for Phillips over both though so keep your eye out for those too. There are stacks of them on US ebay all the time. I don't know why any yanks buy modern preamp tubes.

12ax7 I'm looking at these ones since I love high gain http://www.dougstubes.com/brands/ru...high-grade.html
EL84's these ones http://www.dougstubes.com/tad-el84-str.html or these http://www.dougstubes.com/ruby-el84cz.html EL34's these http://www.dougstubes.com/power-tub...uby-e34lcz.html (selected and matched jj's) or http://www.dougstubes.com/power-tub...a7/jj-kt77.html opinions? no money for SED or NOS tubes I play sludge and prog metal, think Mastodon.

The Rubies with cz after the code are JJ's. Those are the ones you want.
The KT77's have more bottom end than the EL34's but for you I'm thinking it's probably easier and better to go with JJ EL34L. They have about the same bottom end as a 77 but still sound EL34'ish. Check ebay though. It isn't uncommon to see RCA and GE 12AX7's going for less than a JJ.

That is so frickin' cool. He seems like a real cool guy and has always been super responsive and a non-bullshitter. He seems to have a megaton of JAN Phillips stuff - at least consider one of those. Otherwise, I'd say Cathbard pretty much nailed it and knows a lot more about tubes than I do.

No, they are Sovteks afaik. I said it before - the only modern EL84 worth pissing on is a JJ. Period.

Get a Phillips 5751 while you are at it. They are great for either the PI or the first gain stage.
I just looked at the email again that I got from dougstubes and that sale ends on the 14th.

Phillips tubes are good in general. They are definitely my favourite yanky tube. They tend to go for a higher price than RCAs and certainly GE. GE look to be fairly cheap at times and they are a fine tube. No Phillips but certainly a fine tube.
You're going to turn into a collector before you know it. Haunt ebay for a couple of days just for the **** of it and see what passes through. I think you'll be surprised at what's out there being traded around.
