Family Time

So guys, I come home for Fall Break in my Sophomore year of college and last night I went out to jam with my friends who I haven't seen since I left.

The problem is that that there was a "family get-together" happening last night and my parents got all pissed off because I wasn't there. Just now it happened again. My parents were going to some party with some of my dad's work buddies and were expecting me to go along and they got angry when I didn't go.

I don't understand the problem, I'm home for like 3 days and I feel I should be able to do whatever I want with the little time I have, but they seem to think that I should just be dragged around to these social events that are boring. I only live about an hour away from school so its not like I ever see them.

Am I really obligated to partake in these events or are my parents just trying to guilt trip me?

I would have gone to the family get-together myself. But it sounds like they're trying to guilt trip you for the second one

I would have gone to the family get-together, but my family is really fun so I enjoy my family's parties and stuff more than the average person.

Just set-aside a few hours for your parents. You can't keep choosing friends over family.

Tell them to get over it, your parents are ''pissed'', that something I'd expect a 15 year old girl to say. If they're that controlling than just ignore them. Shit it's not like you just got back from a war or something.

Some of my friends deal with shit like that too. They always get like forced to spend the whole evening and night at their parents place no matter what because they just want to have an average dinner with them. Like I get it, but it's so ****ing cheesy at the same time. Like: ''oh haven't seen you in so long i miss you! let's have a dinner liker we usually do when you're not here''.

I don't know, I find that whole nuclear family really cheesy, and to be honest, very embarrassing and I'll even go so far as to say humiliating. That stuff doesn't really happen to me anymore but when I see some of my friends in weird awkward situations like that it just makes so ****ing sorry for them. Like **** that's weird as hell. Just doesn't feel natural to me.

Yea, if I was your parents I wouldn't want to be around you either.

You sound like a humungous ass.

I'm just not a big ''family'' person. Even when I was a kid, that sort of stuff just made me feel awkward.

If I was in your position, I honestly would probably hang out with friends, and then felt guilty about it and have the situation stuck in my head for a much longer time than would even make sense.

Ask you folks if they'd meet you in the middle and you do the get-together for a few hours and then jam with friends for a few hours.
