At crossroads

So pit i have come to a crossroad in my life. I am just coming to the end of my first year at uni and I am not really enjoying it like i thought i would. I am studying a bachelor of digital media. I'm not sure if i should continue on with my degree, or if i should defer for a year and go work in the snowfields and travel Indonesia in the summer.

I just feel like i am stuck in life not going forward or back.

Basically I just need other people to talk about it to who aren't my parents.

EDIT: I wanted to take a year off before uni, but i felt pressured by my parents into going straight into it.

Deferring means that you just continue your course where you left off, doesn't it?

Yolo. Really. If you want to defer, do it. You'll have time to reflect and reevaluate the direction of your life. Perhaps explain to your parents that your current dissatisfaction might negatively impact your grades if you stay on just for their sake.

This. You're only young once, only at uni once, seems mental to force yourself through it out of parental pressure. Do you lose anything by deferring? I know I would have had to pay the triple tuition fees if I had taken a gap year, so it wasn't really an option.

This is bad advice, and the advice I gave someone who wanted to drop out of her first year and then wasted another year before finally dropping out.
If you aren't enjoying it, then you don't have to continue.

On the other hand, I also almost quit towards the end of my first year. I'm bloody glad I didn't though since I'm now in Paris on a badass placement. And I did reasonably well in my second year and started to enjoy it.
If on the off chance that it's the academic stuff that's killing you like it was for me, go to see your department's academic writing tutor. Mine reallllllly helped me.

Take a year off. I wasn't enjoying my uni course after the first year but decided to carry on anyway. Doing another 2 years of a subject I didnt really like was hell.

Luckily here the government pays for it and you pay them back with no interest after you are earning a certain amount of money.

OK thanks, this is helping me decide what i want to do.

Why do you keep talking about it like it's some bad thing? You get some awesome loan payment conditions, like only paying 9% of what you earn beyond 21k a year and if you haven't payed it within 30 years, it will be deleted.

I have to pay everything within 20 years after I get a job when I go back to Norway... and I pay international fees.

So? There is no amount of your whinging that can change the fact that 9k/year debt is objectively worse than 3k/year debt.

do you what you think will make you happy , even if it's not for the long run...

I wasted 2 years of my life trying to do some electriques course, after the first year i tried to leave but no place else would take me, and my grades started getting lower when i started drinking everyday.
basically, now when i try and get into another school they just see my grades from the previous years and pretty much ignore me.

leave now while it still looks good, and you still care about it...

ya'know, just my 2 cents

I think the problem is that you're doing a degree in DIGITAL MEDIA.

Deferring a year just because you're having a bit of a man period and you "feel like you're not going anywhere" doesn't SOUND much of a valid reason, on the face of it. Suck it up and get on with it. You and God knows how many other people probably feel the same.

Or even change to another degree if the course is dragging you down. Talk to somebody at your Uni who can actually help you.

Although I'm a stubborn, almost masochistic old git. If I were you I'd just get on with it and see how the second year improves no matter how much I hated it.

"gap" years are a waste of time. Coming from someone who has wasted a couple years not being in university.
