How to analyse a poem without a deeper intention/meaning ?

I have to analyse a poem tomorrow. I was thinking about this one (roughly translated)

My wife works
her ass off
so I can
completely devote
myself to art

allegedly,
because what I
basically do
is drinking booze
and watching porn.
In addition I
complain alot
about people
who actually
do something.

Any tips

Yes I've considered this poem seriously. It's for my exam.

Oh and the style is absurdism

Meter and Rhyme are your friends.

Also format, does the Meter follow any pre-set structure, like a Petrarchan or Shakespearean Sonnet?

Stuff like that. There are lots of technical aspects of poetry you can look at without worrying about meaning.

Though the meaning tends to be the most interesting part and the part that will really be good for grades... there often is a deeper meaning, sometimes entire poems can be one HUGE metaphor.

Just because you can't see it doesn't mean it's not there. Get creative.

Don't do it. I'm not even trying to screw with you, seriously don't do it.

There are kids who try and do something silly in their exams for laughs and they always fail and **** it up. This is a test. It is obviously important on some level. Pick a decent poem, play the game, get a good grade.

No, the fun thing is, as far as I know, the writer completely ignored all known rules for (classical) poetry, like sonnets & stuff. That's why it's so hard to give my own interpretation. Last year, the guy with the best grade did a poem which consisted of 100 different words for vagina, and just that. Go figure.

It's not a particularly good piece. Basically reads like a sub-par poet racked with self loathing. I think that's about everything there is to say about it.

Just do "Dulce Et Decorum Est..." the meaning is "War is bad. Patriotism sucks." Easiest poem to analyze and now-a-days you can just google (poem name) analysis and it has all the answers.

It's forbidden to choose widely known poems, because there is no point in analysing them, since there are lots of analysations already.

Who wrote the poem? You say you had to translate it? I reckon pick a different poem as there's really not much to analyse. I like this poem though. Very deadbeat plain speaking style like Bukowski or Baudelaire.

Yeah the reason I chose this one is because it's completely absurd. Actually, my dad helped me pick some poetry books in the library, and when we saw this one we both burst into laughing over the floor ( so to say ). It's a made up poem from a made up writer, from a book called "Net niet verschenen boeken" (dutch for "books that almost got published"). The writer is famous for his super absurd cartoons, search gummbah

Or, you know, pick a poem that is actually worth the paper it's written on and analyse that instead?

Your prof sounds completely ridiculous, if he let some kid get away with that. In my university, I'd have gotten 1) flunked AND 2) a stern (and well deserved) talk about how that's inappropriate.

How that's inappropiate
Grow up man, this is absurdism at it's finest.

There's actually a website dedicated to that poem - see for yourself
http://www.ohkut.com/ (it's dutch tho)

My suggestions:

Luck in Sarajevo - Izet Sarajlic
This Dead Relationship - Katherine Pierpoint
Changing The Subject - Carole Satyamurti
And The Days Are Not Full Enough - Ezra Pound
Grass - Carl Sandburg

None of them are absurdist, but that's because absurdism is rather sophomoric and irritating the majority of the time.

Edit: ^ 'Absurdism at its finest'.
