Unhappy Practice Techniques Help Please!!!

Hey everyone,

I've been playing guitar for almost 9 years now and from what I've been told I've gotten pretty good. The only issue I have with that is this:

I have never had a lesson and I have never played or practiced any exercises at all. Everything I know is solely from practicing songs.

It bothers me and I feel if I were to learn some scales and exercises I could be much much better than I already am.

So does anyone know where I can find some good basic scales to go off of? and then work my way to some more advanced ones?

Thanks guys, the help would be much appreciated.

There's no such thing as "advanced" or "basic " scales, learning one repeating sequence of notes is no easier or more difficult than learning another.

scales are not about technique, they're about understanding how music works - they won't help you with the physical aspects of playing the guitar but they will help you immensely with the mental aspects. The most important one is the major scale, that's the cornerstone of music theory and what most htings come back to or relate to.

If you want technical exercises then there's loads of them in the exercises sticky at the top of the page.

Steven Seagull is a beautiful person with a heart of gold and a beak of the proudest yellow.
