really? It was like that at school but not at Uni. At Aberdeen Uni, we mark everything out of 20 for some reason, and 18 to 20 (90%+) is a First.

I think our grading system is rather illogical. 75% is average? It's mostly correct! They should change the concepts of average and just increase the standards. There should also be merit credit for those that can go above 100% with extra credit.

Here in southern Ontario, we use numbers to represent letters to represent percentages (because that makes more sense than using letters). The lowest possible passing grade is a 50%, which is a 1- (D-). Then it goes 54-57% is a 1, and 58-59 is a 1+. It continues like that until the 80's. Then it's 80-85% 4-, 86-94% is 4, and 95%+ is 4+. I have no idea what it is compared to other systems but that's how it is where I am.

90% and above is an A, with 90-93% being A- a majority of the time.

BUT, there are curved grading scales in the US for some classes. My Physics class for example gave me a C when I got around a 50% in the class.

My Physics class gave me a C when I got 78% in the class.

And everybody was failing that class.

Main I wish ours was that easy. Ours is:

50%-pass
65%-H3 (third)
70%-2B (2:2)
75%-2A-(2:1)
80%-H1 (first)

My undergrad uni differed by professors.

Most common was 92 and above was an A.

Sorry to pick on you in particular, out of all the posts similar to yours, but you can't seriously be this stupid... can you? You're trolling, right?

How difficult is it to grasp the concept that if 70+% in the UK = 4.00 GPA, it must be harder to get 70% in the UK exam, than the American exam?! Come on, this is a really simple scale of relativity!

The percentage boundaries for a particular grading do not correlate to how difficult an exam is relative to a different exam, that has different grade boundaries; all it shows is that if one grade weighs in the same as another grade on a different exam, one exam is more difficult as an exam therefore it has the lower grade boundaries.

But it really isn't easy though. Getting a First in the UK is pretty damn hard (as it should be). I guess the exams must be harder in the UK, even though I don't really have anything to compare to.

I'm fairly certain that most universities normalise students' ranking anyway, so whatevs. Only a few students would get the top mark, most students would get somewhere just above pass rate etc.

No, they aren't. Based on the "research", done by a Dutch organization and not corroborated by anyone else, your 8 actually corresponds to fuck all. The main argument for that distribution is that "Americans give out undeserved high grades, whereas the Dutch single out perfection".

I figured because it seems there is no real standard grading across universities in any one country, it would vary how hard it is to get above 70% or whatever. So actual university attended would be more important to the grade in the end. Of course though, quality of the grade and the quality of the university aren't necessarily correlated.

when I studied at Cass you had to have your face firmly in the lecturer's arse all term to get above 90%

Neo, what did you get if you don't mind me asking?

And I might be wrong but at Glasgow Uni - I'm pretty sure a 1st was 87% and some people in my class were pissed cause all the other universities held it at 70%. But that could have just been for my subject, Computing Science.

But yeah - 70% is the standard in the UK for a 1st.

At my school you need a 93% to get an A, and we do not recognize A+'s. You need to get 84% for a B, 75% for a C, and anything less than a 75% was considered failing.

At my high school, it went like this:

100-90 = A
89-80 = B
79-75 = C
74-70 = D
69-0 = F (failing)

At my college, I've never had worse than a B, so I honestly don't even know how it's different.
