This is going to haunt me for some time, I imagine.

edit: oh man hahahhaha that is disturbing haha.. but that's hands down the gnarliest thing i've seen in months

Get some LSD and a pencil. Alternatively, just get photoshop.

Buy some oil paints, canvas and a selection of brushes, (including household decorating brushes) watch any Bob Ross vid and copy him. You'll soon be doing 'fairly acceptable art'.
Although that term 'fairly acceptable art' is a bit of a misnomer, all art is 'acceptable', there is no 'good' or 'bad' art because art is subjective. No matter how bad a piece of art may seem to an individual, there's always going to be someone somewhere who'll love it.

Here's what you need to do art:

Though if I'm honest, I prefer these.

Maybe I should be more specific.

Right now, I'm looking to learn some basic pencil drawing but with a focus on realism. What would be a good way of learning to do that? Besides trial and error.

For those Magic the Gathering type works youd need photoshop and a drawing tablet. For starting out just get paper and pencil lol.
Learn lighting and perspective by picking one thing and drawing it over and over and over from different angles.

Check out the book 'drawing on the right side of the brain', lots of BS in it but the exercises are good and drastically improved my drawing ability over maybe 3 days.

But seriously, I think it would be easier to start off drawing with a pencil rather than using photoshop.

I don't use paper or pens/pencils.

Ok, I'll change it slightly:
