"Walk This Way" Solo
Okay so I was taking a look at the three solos from Walk This Way, and I quickly became very confused...
I realize its in C Major/A minor, but has anyone actually ever took them apart theoretically? Am I crazy or is it all over the place? It seems like the majority of his licks incorporate notes that are very foreign to the key...yet it sounds pretty consonant. I try to play in this style, even using the exact same notes as him, and it sounds completely off key. HOW DO YOU DO THIS JOE PERRY?! |

It can't be in both C major and A minor, they are two different keys. Closely related, yes, but different nonetheless.
There are no out of key notes. The song is in the key of Am and any notes played are in that key. They may not be in the Am scale but they still resolve to A. They are called accidentals.

Where did you learn the three solos? By ear or from tab? The quality control on tabs is...well... like the quality control in neolithic sling shot making...

So why do you think the key is A minor or C major?

Well yes A minor and C major are relatives, and the song is in C major according to multiple sources.
I learned the song by both tab and ear. I know what accidentals are but you should that realize either the majority of his notes are accidental (which would be pretty wacked unless he's using chromaticism, which he isn't). There's a good chance he's simply modulating to the rhythm changes, which isn't something that you find in rock too much. |

Fun fact, it resolves to A minor, not C major.
It's in A minor bro.

Parts of the song are in C major and parts are in A minor. So yes, it's in both keys. Just not at the same time, of course.
