They're called time signatures or meter. You find out which one is being used by counting the beats to a measure and feeling the emphases (the first beat is always strongest). But, I think you're trollin.

If you can't tell what the meter is, you have a lot of work to do.

TS, tap your foot to this song and see how many beats you get before it "repeats."

most people focus on what scales and notes they're playing
hell, 90% of people i talk to about music don't know what scales actually are - it's just some "music theory hubbub" they heard about on the internet but were too lazy to worry about. how am i supposed to give my shpeal about not worrying about music theory so they can focus on their ear when they do neither of those things and don't plan to? if you were to meet most of the regulars in EG on the street, they probably wouldn't even know what a meter is unless they have GP5 rather than .txt tabs. we take a lot for granted here

You should listen to music in these time signatures and then try writing some music in 5/4, 7/4 etc.
Take 5 is a famous track in 5/4. Mission Impossible is another. A lot of the music I hear in 5/4 feels like it's two parts i.e. 1,2,3 + 4,5 - The 4th beat is slightly accented.

It's usually fairly easy to tell when something isn't in 4/4 time. Chances are, the song is in 4/4. If you want to delve into it further, I'd suggest downloading TuxGuitar, and some Dream Theater guitar pro tabs. They change time a lot, and you can listen to each measure, and how the timing is.

Or you could download the score to the Rite of Spring and follow it to the recording. Your recognition of time signatures would definitely improve. ![]() |

Its worse when you try to learn crazy long dream theater songs, and you have to anticipate when it's coming.

jesus, that's just absolutely overkill and doesn't seem appropriate at all for a marching arrangement unless you can backflip over the drum majors without inconsistent breathing

How can you practice this? I can't figure it out by tapping my foot or anything, even when I know the time signature I can't tell. I tried counting out loud to take five and I can't get 5/4 I always make it 4/4. Same with black dog, I know its 5/4 but when I try to count I just get 4/4.

As soon as he finds out that Mike Portnoy is basically unable to keep the beat for long without changing it he's gonna get traumatized. |
