I've been thru the gigs. Moving amps around and sound checks and I've come to a conclusion. I don't need a huge amp to play a gig. Almost always got mic'd up.
Currently I own the egnator renegade which I'm selling for finacle reasons. When I buy a new amp i want that dist slash Hendrix. I know there not the same sound. The idea is so I can have a lil dist and a lot of dist. Pedals I have OCD, grunge, boss ac3, dd8, dunlop Wah. Play a Gibson with p90. Wanna spend 400 - 500 Used Combo style or head with single cab Sidney new York Jam band blues stuff Tube Small size amp easy to carry Small to medium gigs. Cleans and dist are important. If I forgot anything sorry haven't been on here in a while. S6s Also please note: at practice the amp needs to be able to play with a full band un mic'd. With my egnator I never had it past 3 or 4 and it was fine. So may be one I can crank and get that nice Hendrix dist raw sound. Hope that helps

Peavey classic 30 comes to mind. marshall DSL combo if you can find it used. For gigging a Vypyr 60 tube would be nice as well. Very versatile.

No, both those amps are giggable, I can see how my statement was confusing. I just meant the vypyr was good for gigging because its versatile.

The JCA20 or JCA50 might be something to look into, although they are somwhat modern-voiced. You could probably find a Rebel 30 for that price, maybe a little more. If you don't mind hybrid-ness of it, the Blackstar HT-40 would be worth a look. An Egnater Tweaker would be worth checking out, too. If you already have a cab, the Tiny Terror is in this price range.
If clean cleans aren't THAT important, you could check out the Blackheart Handsome Devil and Marshall Class 5, although the Class 5 probably won't getover your drummer at practice. With most smaller amps, you're probably looking at a single channel with somewhat compromised cleans anyway. Other than those, the Classic 30 and DSL401 would be good options, like Kevin Saale said.

+1 to the DSL401. Great little combos. Very nice British blues sound. Also can hit some 80s rock tones with a boost. And I love the DSL cleans.

On the topic of the DSL. I found 2 a 15c and a 40c and there $100.00 difference...
Now I'm guessing the 40 is a better deal. But y are they priced like that? I see a peavy classic 30 and I was really impressed by that one... Just reading abou the dsl40 gets me excited!!

The DSLC is a new DSL. The original DSL's came out in the late 90s and were discontinued a few years ago. The new ones either just came out, or are about to. I have yet to play one. The only differences to my knowledge is the new one has a digital reverb instead of a spring, and it uses an improved effects loops which was definitely needed. If you can afford a new one, grab it. And give us a review! The old ones are solid, and reliable. I had a speaker cable break which tripped the fuse. But other than that never had a single problem with mine. They did not make a 15 watt DSL in the first run. I would go for the 40 watt if you buy a new one. Especially if its only 100 bucks difference. EDIT: The new DSL 100H Is 900 bucks new?!?!? That will either be really really good for the value of my old one. Or really really bad. I wonder if they are made in Britain still? Id hate to see the DSL name ruined. DOUBLEDIT: The new DSLs are made in Vietnam. So... Your call on that one. I would go for an old one. Just because Handmade in Britain just sounds better than Hand Made in Vietnam. ****ITTRIPLEDIT: I just watched a Sweetwater review of the 15C and must say, for a 15 watt head, its pretty ballsy. Not to shabby. Now time will only tell to see if they reliable and worth the price. Last edited by nickdohle : 10-15-2012 at 06:21 AM. |

I personally hope they're worth a shit to bring a name back to Marshall. If they pop out an excellent sounding, well-made, fairly versatile, affordable amp in the current economic times, they might stand a chance for people actually buying their amps again. The general consensus on their more recent amps like the Vintage Modern, MA100, and JVM seems to be VERY hit or miss, with more miss than hit. Most people either love them or hate them, with the only in-betweeners usualyl saying that they didn't sound BAD, but it sure wasn't the Marshall they were expecting. The Class 5 seems to be the only good one they've put out recently. With how big they were in the 80's with the JCM800, Peavey has taken their crown in recent times with the 6505. It would be nice to see Marshall back in their game again.

+1 on the classic 30- I've seen those used for everything from Ska bands to blues bands, to an alternative metal group around here (guy uses two in stereo, with a lot of boost into one of them, for a huge distortion sound).

the 30 is good.
I found the 50 wasn't that heavy. I can carry one and some other stuff quite easily when unloading my bands stuff. |

i played the new DSL 15 watt and 40 watt versions.
you don't want those. you want an older DSL 401. a 40 watt DSL 112 combo. it wipes the floor with the new ones. edit: last sentence was on the whompass, fixed it. Last edited by gregs1020 : 10-15-2012 at 10:52 PM. |

Greg played one of the new DSLs and said they suck.
I think Kevin Saale pretty much hit the nail on the head in the first post. +1 to all of those.

That OP was down right painful to read.
If you have to sell a Renegade for financial reason then maybe you are not making enough money gigging. Gigging CAN be a lost proposition you know. Besides, you'll be lucky to get $650 for it. I'd keep the Renegade and get a second job or ***** yourself out maybe. ![]()

Is there anything current in the same race? Sometimes old amps are hard to find. May be a orange. I dunno.
