Distortion Pedal

I'm looking for a distortion pedal to add in front of my AC30.

With singled coiled guitars you get a fantastic overdrive but I'm wanting to play heavier.

Think old school punk, old green day (dookie), sex pistols, even soaring queen leads which I can't achieve with single coils, (chimey and not enough gain). The hard rock +classic rock bands like Guns n Roses . I'm also looking for a fuzz though (Hendrix, The Black Keys). I'm not sure if there are any '2 in 1' pedals or if there are any great deals out there for two (like a big muff + a distortion pedal).

Just a nice crunchy sound which would also be great for leads.

Preferred new (musoscorner.com.au) but don't mind if its used.
Budget would be around $150AUD (don't think I could get two pedals for this budget)

I was looking at getting a RAT.

Cheers.

You will probably have to settle for either a fuzz or distortion. I know some high end fuzz pedals can get pretty close to a punkish distortion.

However, I didnt really like the Rat I tried. But I didnt play with it for long.

Though..... If you are interested..... I have a big muff pi. I hate it. Just dont like fuzz pedals. I opened it up thinking about modding it but never got around to it. Its missing some screws but its in perfectly working condition. If you are interested in it, I would sell it dirt cheap. Just PM me.

You sir must not like fuzz,
Rat is officially the best thing ever and can get pretty fuzzy and a big muff will always do you right. Id reccomend a rat to start with for an ac30, works for me, I use a musket which is a muff clone pedal.
Listen to some demos online first.

The Rat can certainly get to GN'R levels of dirt that I know. However for a fuzz I'd recommend something else entirely, although the Rat can also work kind of as a fuzzy distortion.

By the way, Queen leads were always achieved with single coils But Brian May wired them weirdly and was in essence able to combine the singles on his guitar to humbuckers.

Yea it was a complete impulse buy. And I played a rat shortly after buying it. Never liked the fuzzy dirt.

TS, Its been a long time since Ive played the rat. But looking up some demos I think It might fit in with what you want well enough to get away with.

Though, my Muff is big and fuzzy and definitely for sale. Gotta love shameless plugs..

I'm not a fan of fuzz pedals either. I discovered this after buying a Big Muff Germanium Pi - it sounds great when I'm just jamming around, but it doesn't really suit my style that well for the songs I record.

TS - The EHX Big Muff Germanium Pi could be a good one for you to look at. It's a good fuzz pedal as well as a good overdrive pedal. It works well with my AC4, so I'd guess it would be even better with your AC30.

You would be wrong.

Big Muff is more of a cross between a fuzz and a distortion.

Fuzz Face or Tone Bender would be the standard, and even that's up for debate depending on the type of fuzz you want.

Everything is up for debate!

EHX describe the Big Muff I have as a distortion, every review I've ever read about it describes it as a fuzz. I don't think there's really a definitive place where fuzz becomes distortion & vice versa, all pedals are different and there's a lot of pedals that sit somewhere on the curve between the two sounds.

Yep - I believe November 2001 was when UG was updated with the ability to sign up as a member. There are a couple of other guys from around that time that are still here, but there aren't many of the original UGers left - and TBH, I've come & gone a few times over the years so there are newer members who could reasonably argue they've been here longer than me due to never having left.

Thanks for some of the suggestions guys! Anyone got advice though on just a nice crunchy distortion pedal? Forgot to mention the only overdrive/distortion pedal I own is the SD-1 which definietely is not suitable.

Cheers.

Talk to Tim Green of Toyroom FX.
He's greeny23 on here.

Have him build you a King of Tone

If you want versatile try grabbing a Dr Scientist The Elements. They're a bit more than your budget will allow (Going by the PGS price, shipping is cheap too) but they're plenty versatile.

Otherwise, for distortion I'd recommend the Hardwire SC2. Good, versatile distortion pedal. Won't do your fuzz but it'll get you the distortion tones you want otherwise.

Though I do not agree with darkwolf on the whole Muff aint a fuzz debacle, the Tim Green suggestion is a great Idea.

Plus you live in Australia so it would be even better. He has ToyRoom FX. Go to there website, and send him an Email describing what you want. He can build it. Plus, it would be hand built by a bad ass. So its a double win
