New EP! (C4C)
I released my first EP today! I'm pretty happy with it as far as the songs go, but I'm looking for some outside opinions on it! Any feedback on any of these songs will be appreciated.

The vocals kind of remind me of some riot grrrl stuff, or at least all-girl rock bands. Kind of like Autoclave. The mix could use a little work, or something cause the songs just don't have that 'full' sound, ya know? I'm no pro at mixing though so I'm not completely sure.
Second song has a nice solo type thing or riff that plays through the right speaker, I liked it. Its my favorite part of the song, I wish it had more moments like that. Starting around 1:48ish the song starts to pick up. Parts before it were kind of boring. Third song reminds me of the band Helium. Its not bad, but it has that generic feel to it. Feels like I've heard this song many times before. I can't really call the song bad, its just there is nothing that makes it stand out. The final song has a nice feel to it. Perfect song to end an album (or EP in this case) on. Its slower and more chill while having some interesting moments and staying relaxing. Probably my favorite on the EP. Overall the EP just didn't stand out to me. Too much of it felt too 'familiar', nothing stood out. And the mix needs some work too imo. Some parts of the EP had moments were I thought were really good but then others not so much. Definitely has potential though.

Imo, it's hard to judge with the mix the way it is, can barely hear the drums, guitars are super muddy don't have any presence. I think the singer could use a bit wider range but she still sounds good, would be even better through a nice mic! The melody in Loveless sounds really good too
These songs sound good but I think the presentation just need some work!

Hey man, diggin' the name of your band. I'm not a fan of cocaine, but I am a real life lightsaber wielding samurai myself. Anyhow, onto the EP.
When I'm 24 -- Diggin' the track, but the first thing that jumps out at me right away is that the bass is too high in the mix and I feel like the sound of the bass needs to be compressed a bit because it's really overpowering everything. The vocals are really high in the mix to compensate for this, which leaves the guitars and drums kind of hard to hear. Anyhow, mix critique aside, the actual composition is good and I like the song, I especially like the sound of your singers voice although I can't really make out what she is saying due to aforementioned mix issues. Loveless -- This one is mixed better and I can hear things clearer. Your singer really does have a great voice. Diggin' the chord voicings you are using in the rhythm guitars, I recognize them and use them myself. This is definitely more of a vocal song and coming from very different influences from the last one. I like it, but I liked the last one a little more. Phantasia -- Lovin' this dude. Right off the bat the rhythm harmonies under the first verse are great. I'm getting some Dinosaur Jr. vibes, although purely from the instrumental. The slowed down bit at 1:33 was a great way of changing up the song while keeping it contiguous. Favorite song so far, only gripe is it was too short! Useless -- I love spacy, ambient, trip out music with sexy whisperings in the background. Reminds me of Vanilla Sky. Anyways. I'm getting some Radiohead vibes now from the harmonies and the scope of the sound. I feel like this is a good way to end the EP. Overall, a good listening, but in general, improving your mix would greatly improve the listening experience because your present mix isn't doing your compositions justice. Anyhow, if you would be so kind as to C4C, you can pick and choose from a few I've recently posted here... http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/foru...d.php?t=1569204 http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/foru...d.php?t=1569056 http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/foru...d.php?t=1569061 http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/foru...d.php?t=1563504 |

I generally agree with everyone else's comments - I think the songs themselves are pretty solid, and your singer does a nice job, but the mix just doesn't sound very professional, especially in the first two songs. As you've probably noticed from the play counts, most people are going to listen to the first tracks and then move on if they get bored, so you want to lead with the best impressions possible. With a better mix, though, I could honestly hear this being a pretty solid garage-punk EP.
Phantasia fixes a lot of the problems with muddiness, especially in the drums, though I think the guitars could stand to be brought up in the mix more. Also, it sounds like you used programmed drums for this. If that's the case, I'd suggest fleshing out the parts a little bit more, since they're a bit boring as is. If I'm an idiot and you actually recorded a drummer, then just tell him to embody the cocaine aspect of your band a bit more and you should be good. :P Overall, though, I like the stuff. The EP has some problems, but I hear a lot of potential in the compositions. Keep it up! And, if you're so inclined, you can check out my song: http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/foru...d.php?t=1570954 |
