To get people thinking:

Most of you have been using facebook for 5-6 years already. You have stopped using Myspace, of which most of you have used for a few years before Facebook, for almost as long.

Has another site trumped it yet in terms of social networking?

Probably.

Myspace catered to a much smaller demographic than Facebook.

I have no idea.

To make this post have substance I predict it will still be around and strong, but it'll be different and at that point decreasing in popularity.

I think Google + still has a chance of overtaking it, because facebook and myspace co-existed for quite a while. Unfortunately Google + seems exactly the same as facebook to me. Really it will come down to Facebook being ******ed and everything being overrun by apps and games and stuff.

On a semi related note, what is with businesses and asking people to like their facebook? I don't see how that accomplishes anything?

Yeah, I think it will be. The internet is really getting...corporatized. If the internet were a small state or country, 10 years ago, it was a bunch of small towns, a few bigger than others. Now, many of them are getting absorbed or deserted, and the state is having big cities as most of the population. Websites like Facebook, Youtube, Google, Wikipedia, etc. are examples.

You're forgetting that corporations are people, and likes boost people's self-esteem.

i think Facebook is dead in another five years. This social networking crap is nothing new, there have been quite a few over the years, each one more popular than the last, but they always collapse. If facebook keeps it up with all their security issues and continually bogging down the site with features no one wants or needs (it takes quite a while to load completely even on fast connections), they will end up shooting themselves in the foot. I've also heard from a few financial news outlets that quite a few big money advertisers have pulled their ads from facebook because they have not seen the increase in business that they thought it would bring. And don't forget the fiasco that was facebook's IPO. From my view, there are already cracks showing.

Also, i don't know about you guys, but my own usage of the site has dropped off significantly since i first joined (in '07 i think), and most of my friends are using it less and less. People are fickle creatures. It's only a matter of time before the next big thing in social networking comes along.

It won't go away for awhile. And I can't see it having a real competitor either.

Yes, but how often do they log in? When the log in, how often do they actually post things? I know everybody with a computer has a facebook page, but so many people sign up for things like facebook and then they don't use it. It becomes a "digital graveyard" (the profiles and what not are still there, but no one logs in to check them). I've seen the cartoon (funny actually as i find zuckerberg to be insufferably pretentious), your point has been noted, and i still stand by what i said.

Great way of putting it. Facebook is much more well organized than any other social networking site. It'd have to do something very stupid in order for people to search for alternatives.

I believe the original "Facebook" was gone as soon as peoples mothers and grandmothers started joining. With their withered skin and dull eyes. In 5 years it will probably still be around, be it an empty husk rocking in the wind, because a small pebble is just enough in the way to keep it there, for the years that went on...
