Alternative for Mastortion
Hey y'all!
Does anyone have a good suggestion for an alternative for the Mastortion? I really like the tone but the musicstores over here can't order them for me Thanks in advance ![]() |

Build One! (if you can) most of Zvex's dirtboxes are one or two super hard on boosts and sometimes a tone filter or some other added circuit to contol a different parameter, the schematics for most of his stuff can be found online.

get a copy of the pedal. i have 3 zvex clones, cuz i know people who can make a good product and charge a much more reasonable price.
i would love to buy from zvex, but with what little i know of guitar pedals i still find his prices sickeningly high.

Ha, so true! are you after the Mastortion because you're a big Mastodon fan, or because you need a heavy overdrive? Because frankly the guy from Mastodon's tone probably comes more from his Orange Rockerverbs and JCM800s than from the pedal. And if you just want a good heavy dirt box, there are hundreds of choices available that are cheaper and easier to get hold of. What amp are you using now?

I want the Mastortion because I need a heavy overdrive. I'm not really after getting the same tone as they have.
At the moment I'm using a Cube 80X. Sometimes combined with a Carslbro Bassbeaver for a bit more low in my sound. @eppicurt, You're not helping.... @ the other guys, I'm not looking for the Mastotron sound by Zvex, I'm looking for the mastortion bij Monstereffects (A good alternative that is) |

If you like it that much, what's wrong with ordering online? Every pedal I have was bought online, because I either have to drive two hours to find a place that has them, they aren't carried in any store in my local vicinity or even state (Timmy), and I liked them enough to do so. Ninety percent of what I have was purchased online. Eppicurt WAS helping. Buying online is a GREAT way to get gear that you normally couldn't (and the prices are usually better than in a store).
On the other hand, your Cube isn't going to help much in letting the pedal making your tone better. I wouldn't do it, but the decision is yours.

Fancy, boutique overdrive pedal into a Cube doesn't really make any sense to me...doesn't the Cube have enough gain for you?

I'm just not a big fan of ordering stuff online. Yes, some people don't like ordering stuff.
Anyway, I asked if you guys had any suggestions for an alternative for the mastortion. I'm not asking you guys for advice regarding my current set-up, when playing with the band we use marshall jcm 900's so that already is way different than my home set up. |

Okay. No one here is trying to be difficult. As per rules of the forum, that kind of stuff should have been said up front without letting everyone go on some wild goose chase of extrapolation. The more informative as to what you play (genres and bands for example and reference), your price range, preferred method of purchase and reasons why, and what your rig set-up is, the easier it will be people to help you and people won't waste your time with suggestions that are useless to you. Now do you plan on running the JCM900 clean or distorted? It might not be good to run a distortion pedal into an already distorted amp as they tend to work better into amps that are a bit cleaner. Overdrives (depending on which one) mix better with amp distortion though.

Why, because you're scared of buying online? Have fun finding one otherwise.

look man, he doesn't want criticism... he evidently needs affirmation. don't criticize his buying habits, or his gear, or his conclusions. just tell him things he wants to hear. @TS: a rat proco should do what you want. you can find one.

@gumbilicious,
Thanks! I'll try to find the Rat in the local stores over here and see what it does. Having a clone built is a nice idea as well, I'm certainly taking this one with me. @sg4ever The JCM900 will be clean. @eppicurt, Thanks for your marvelous and especially helpfull tips... as I said, I wasn't looking for the mastortion, I'm looking for an alternative. |
