Oh yeah, dude. I wouldn't ever need an OD or anything with one. Hell people put boosts in front of the VTM which I feel is absurd. hahaha.

Yeah, John was one of the first people I talked to about the VTM when I ordered it, 311.
It really is a nice amp.

attached pics of new setup. need to get the pot on the "Presence" knob replaced, it sits loose and doesn't change any tone when moved either way.
I love the over all sound of it, although I have to be honest... the sensitivity switch is definitely not what I expected. It's almost like it adds more bass to the overall sound, and a more gain-ey pre amp sound. It's nice, don't get me wrong... but I think I might be in the market for a good Overdrive/Fuzz/Distortion pedal or something if you have any suggestions. Think... fuzzed out, melodic, stoner riffs ![]() But yeah, love the amp. Great piece of gear. |

yo dudes, I haven't been on UG in some time, and it warms my heart to read talk of VTMs in the first thread I click on!
![]() here's my most recent basement recording on my VTM60, I think it fits this thread rather well: profile.ultimate-guitar.com/spiff389/music/all/play1160025 edit: or just click to my profile, the song is the only one on my profile

Hey guys, I'm looking for a new guitar and I think you all probably understand the tone I'm looking for.
My current rig is: a mid 80's Marshall JCM800 through a) a mesa 4x10 or b) a randall warhead w v30s. All I use now is an Epiphone Les Paul Custom. I've had a dozen other guitars but I ended up selling them all, as this is the only one I've really liked enough to keep. I'm thinking about jumping into the used Gibson market? But I'm not sure. My ultimate budget is probably around $500, and used is preferred with me. Bands I aim to sound like-ish: Mastodon, Baroness, High on Fire, The Sword, Doomriders, etc. Tuning will be primarily drop c and drop b. Any advice would be awesome ![]()

Dude, you could swing a faded gibson SG/SG Special for that price. And then maybe upgrade the pickups if you see fit. SGs are pretty suitable for that shit. Hell if you get lucky you could probably find a lower end Yamaha SG/SBG. I'd probably start with one of those two.

Agreed! Some used SG Standards and the Tributes are close to that budget.

If you can find an used SG Standard around that price then go for it. The Faded/Special/Tribute ones I've played are rather meh, they don't necessarily play better than the upper-range Epiphone you have, not that much of an upgrade IMO. If you can't find an used SG Standard for $500 then maybe save up a little longer, I think with another $250 or so you can get an used one.

How much lower end is worth it though? Like a 200? or do you mean more like a 500? Anyone here have an opinion on just waiting it out for a first act custom to go up on ebay? I'm thinking about maybe doing that. Hold out for a lola or a sheena for right around 500.

Like the Yamaha SG500. There is one just under $500 around me. Looks gnarly, I just can't justify a new guitar. There was a First Act Sheena on my craigslist for $700 a while back. Looked rad. I actually like the feel of the SG Specials and Fadeds WAYY more than high end Epiphone stuff. Unless we are talking Epiphone Elitist stuff. Elitist Les Pauls out play a lot of the Gibson stuff I've ever played. Including some higher end Les Pauls.

Thanks a bunch for all the info. I've just got to play a nice waiting game now looking for one, either: a first act custom, yamaha sg/sbg, or random darkhorse cheap gibson lp/sg.

Indeed man. Just keep an eye out and try everything thoroughly before you buy it.
I really want to start putting money away for an EGC guitar. Also, I don't regret trading the Budda away at all anymore. I ****ing love the VTM60. haha. Such a gem at $198. Really wish it was the VTM120 though. ha

Explorer Fadeds are the best in my opinion. The faded Vs feel odd. The faded SGs are just pretty okay mid ranged guitars.
I still want a faded explorer so bad.

I've seen that SG prices are not that different between ranges like, let's say, LPs. SG standard is $1,400 usd and SG supreme is $2,000 here in Mexico (both new). Does quality significantly changes between ranges?
What about standards?^^

The Standards are nicer than Fadeds, for sure. Not sure about the supremes but they are ugly.
