Best way to showcase my ability in 3 minutes..
So i applied for a musical performance course not long ago and i got a letter back and they request a portfolio by the 29th of November which has to include a 2-3minute video of me playing my genre / style of music.
I've never had to do something like this before so i'm not sure what to play. I play a blend of metalcore (Parkway Drive / Lamb of God), metal (Avenged Sevenfold / Trivium) and progressive (Dream Theater). I'd say those bands best reflect my playing style / genre. But i don't know what i should play to best showcase my ability.. I don't know whether i should do a sort of medley or an original or a cover of something technical. Any suggestions? Also i hope this is the right forum for this topic.. Thanks in advance ![]()

Something original would really show off your full musical abilities

3 days? You good sir have not read the OP thoroughly! His post clearly says it has to be in by the 29th of November, it's the 26th of October today!

I'm quite liking the idea of an original to be honest. Maybe some nice eery fingerpicked arpeggio's followed up by some soulful shredding kind of stuff.

Oh yeah I did misread . I hereby plead guilty of misreading. I thought it was the 29th of October. So if he's a decent player, he should be able to learn it, I agree (I think a month wouldn't be enough for me, lol, but I'm not a very good player). edit: I liked the idea of making a medley, though. Dream Theater has done it several times and the outcome is really awesome if done well (the Big Medley, or the Achilles' last stand/Rover medley just to name two, were awesome). uhum uhum, very nice medleys indeed. one more thing that came to my mind to REALLY impress them would be Dance of Eternity. If you nail that i'd praise you ![]()

Obviously reduce the shredding to a minimum and make it look playful. It mustnīt look/sound difficult. Only let it flash up here and there and else focus on really good timing and phrasing.
Personally I would stay clear of DT, it is too much associated with underaged guitar players sitting in their room in their parents house struggling to get a vibrato going. Perīs leadparts in "deviate from the form" by scar symmetry might be a good example I think, the chord progression is amazing. Also a classical piece might suite, like solfeggietto by JC Bach.
