6 String to 7 String
I'm thinking about trying to get a fairly cheap 6 string off of craigslist and do some modifications to it. Something that I'm also thinking about doing may be to try to turn it into a 7 string.
Do you think this sounds stupid or would this be doable?

Depends on the width of the neck... and you would need a new nut, and new bridge. Im not sure about pickups, i assume they have 6 poles at the minute. I have seen 7 strings with both 6 and 7 poles... but i reckon its doable.
*awaits someone with more knowledge and experience* Also... what guitar is it? |

I would just try to get an Ibanez RG7321 used. I frequently see them on CL and eBay for $150-$250. Great starter seven string.

Well I was thinking about really getting something extremely cheap. Maybe around $50, to practice stripping and repainting. And I thought if I'm getting something really cheap to do that I might as well try doing some other things as well that might require cutting into it.
I was thinking I would get a guitar with a strat body and then maybe cut the body to fit a wider neck in, and maybe enlarge the pickup cavities and bridge. In my mind it seems doable. I would probably get the RG7321 if I just wanted a 7 string, but my main goal is to just do some mods.

You can try that, but a diecent 7 string neck will cost as much as a 7 string cheapo Most (not all) 7 strings are longer than yor typical 24.75/25.5 scale lenghts out there so the bridge would be out of place, the neckpocket would also need to be altered to fit the neck which will be quite difficult if you dont know what your doing

new pickups, new bridge, new neck, most likely new head. Seems like a lot of work and you could buy a cheap agile for the price of those parts alone

I hate to see someone talked out of modding anything, but I"ll have to agree with everyone above..
keep in mind that if you score a cheap 7 string, you can definitely still tear it all apart and mod it to your heart's content Just starting off with something that's already a 7-string would save you a ton of time as well as money ![]() |
