Distortion Tone Question
Hi:
For a while now, I've been using a tone likend to that of heavy driven punk (not over the top, but in no way understated.) I'm looking to get more of a "classic rock" type sound from my gear and a more understated "dry" distortion tone (think "The Real Me" off Quadrophenia). Here's what I have (I'm just going to list all of my gear so you know what I have available to me) Thank you!! Guitars: Gibson SG (2 pickups) Tele with a humbucker (JB-57) bridge pick ups Elektra pre-lawsuit Dan Armstrong Lucite copy Gibson DG-335 Fender HSH Strat Amps: Marshall AVT 150H RMS (ugh hate admitting I have that) Pedals: Dunlop Crybaby Proco Rat 2 GFS Analog Delay Digitech RP90 Digitech Overdrive (the gold one) Digitech DigiVerb thank you so much for your help! If you want that classic rock sound, go for an all-tube amp, as opposed to the AVT, which is only a hybrid. Something with a vintage voice that you can crank up for a more natural overdrive. I'm not sure what was used on quadrophenia though
If i were you, i'd take this thread over to Guitar Gear and Accessories, you already have sweet guitars, now get an amp to do them justice

honestly, it's a pretty easy tone to get.
using your tele, run it directly into the amp on the overdrive channel. keep the gain around 9 o'clock. a good amount of treble and mids, and very little bass. the ideal way to get it, however, is to crank an all tube amp.

thanks! i took your advice and went to the local music shop and plugged into a tube (AC 15) with a Tele. definitely can see the difference. Going to look into picking one of these up for my next show. Thank you!!

before you dive in head first, make sure you do a little research. there are a decent number of amps that might fit your needs, but they're all quite different. different speakers, tubes, gain structures and whatnot will dramatically effect what sort of sound and feel you get. the AC 15 is a good amp, but there are, I think, better amps around for similar money.

I'd think a small Marshall or Vox tube amp might be closest to what you want, but there are other ones that might work from Fender, Orange, Peavey, Egnater, Carvin and so forth.
Play around a little before you commit. My Fender HRD is 40w- too much for my needs, really- but it's cleans are clean as hell. It will deliver anything but the heaviest hard rock & metal. Anything heavier than Iron maiden or YJM, and I'd want to use an amp designed to be heavier.* * which is why I'm looking for a small Orange myself.
