2012 Build Challenge

It's time to get this thing going! After a lot of feedback from y'all, we're going to roll with two categories:

100 GBP Challenge
As the title suggests, you must build a complete guitar or bass for less than 100 British Pounds (or equivalent). This excludes any tool, template, finishing supplies and shipping costs to make sure everyone is on equal footing.
You can use any materials you like, but if it's something you already had lying around the garage then you will need to calculate an approximate value for it.
You have to build the body and neck yourself.

Unlimited Challenge
Again, you must build the neck and body yourself. Other than that there are no restrictions for this challenge - get crazy!

A few other things of note:

Timeline
This competition starts today, which means that all builds must start after today (no finishing off your old builds)
You can start at any time throughout the year, but all builds must be completed by midnight on the 1st of November (GMT) to be considered by the judging panel.

Judging
There will be two methods of judging for each challenge.
The best overall build will be decided by a simple poll, which will be open to the public.
Participants will then vote for 'most creative build', 'best technical build', 'most insightful build', and 'best use of materials' in a closed vote.

To Enter
Drop a post in this thread (make sure you say which challenge you're entering) so we can keep track of all the entries.
Then when you're ready to get started, create a thread with the title either
'100GBP Challenge 2012 - Your Title Here' or 'Unlimited Challenge 2012 - Your Title Here'.
In your thread, post a photo of your raw build materials with the completed cover form (attached below) clearly visible in the picture.
For the 100GBP challenge, include a Bill of Materials in your first post - try to keep it up to date.
You can enter as many times as you like, in either challenge.

There may be some changes to the rules for clarity (I'm sure I've missed something), so keep an eye on this post for the latest.

Good luck guys!

Do you have to build a body or neck, or can you buy it?

whoomit: My bad, it should be up now.

Jake: You have to build the body and neck yourself (it is the point of a build challenge, after all). I'll update the rules to reflect this.

I was waiting for that to come up. No progress yet, but I'll keep you posted. Having an international competition does make things pretty tricky though.

The bill of the materials that you said needs to be in the first post, dose that have to be for all the materials, parts and everything for the build? Because if it dose, that means we can't buymparts and stuff through out the build

Jason: That's fine, but shipping could be up to $100 USD depending on the item. I'm trying to get some vouchers to avoid this, I'll let you know as soon as I do.

da_: Yes it should be in the first post, but you can edit the post at any time throughout the year so can add as many parts as you like.

What about wood that you get for free via dumpster diving, old trees, etc. Does this need to be included? If not, put me in the 100 challenge, otherwise, unlimited.

ok - per jason, put me down for the 100

if you get it for free, then its free.

but saying something like "i bought this body wood 3 years ago and havn't used it yet"

doesn't count as free..

My family has owned/ran an antique sawmill (60" circular blade of death with 24" topsaw) for about 70 years and there's a bunch of lumber that I have available to me. I plan on entering this with a walnut bodied guitar when it warms up.. would this count as free? I didn't personally saw the walnut but I've fell a few trees and help saw up thousands of board feet at this mill.

Hey Boysie8 for now you can put me down for the unlimited challenge. I might enter the 100GBP one as well later, but for now I'm sticking with the unlimited one.

Are we going to be keeping a list of links to all the entry build threads in the original post of this thread once people start opening up build threads, thus making this thread a sort of "master thread" for both competitions? Might be handy.

Yes, duh. But I'm referring to this bit in the OP

"You can use any materials you like, but if it's something you already had lying around the garage then you will need to calculate an approximate value for it."

I think you could count that as free timber, Flux'D. I was more referring to wood that people have bought in the past. Also, super jealous right now!

Lumberjack: I'll put links up under the participant names once people start building.
