Question Help with bass electronics

So I'm looking to build a bass with a piezo bridge. I bought a generic 5 string bridge with a piezo on ebay, and I'm worrying about wiring. Apparently to mix passive pickups with a piezo I need something like this?

My question is, do I really need/want that, and is there a cheaper way to do it? Thats 90 bucks for one piece of electronics.

You need a high impedance preamp, easily made out of a JFET and some passive components that altogether don't cost more than a few $

thats the preamp part, then you need some kind of mixer/balance circuitry.

Thanks! That sounds a lot better than the 90 bucks I'd need to shell out for the other one.
