help me with my future pit

i grew up on a 3-generation farm in northwest iowa.. i'm now attending iowa state university and will soon graduate in biochemistry.

i don't know whether to go on to grad school. whether to go back to the farm. whether to try starting a band for a year or so. i've started too many possible paths and don't know which to go down.

i'm 22 years old and have no idea where i want to be in ten years. i want to start a family at some point. i don't like the education for my future children back home. also i haven't minded living in Ames (50,000 with the university).

Anyone who is in a grad school studying science, or with an ag background?

thanks for any advice.

My advice is to never ask the Pit for advice and don't listen to any advice that the Pit gives you.

Why don't you piss and turn into a lizard?

Pick two to continue: School and band, school and farm, farm and band. At least have more than one thing going, but three may be too many.

It better be something cool, like wolverines. Wolverine farmer is the second best career, only after extreme orange thrower.

Be an astronaut. Start a family with aliens and have a bagillion alien babies. Then bring them back home and you'll be all famous and whatnot so you'll make money. And then the government will want to kill your bagillion alien babies in the name of science but you don't need to worry about that because now you have enough money to be a millionaire and not care about your future.

Problem solved.

...It would. Certain things are in demand over others or too common in certain states. Farming something that's all over the state but not in demand is a bad choice.

my family farms soybeans and corn... we're fairly well established

i most definitely could not do band and grad school... or farm and grad school.. grad school would take up 100% of my time, for at least 5 years, up to 8. when i come out i would be able to get a decent job or maybe be a professor (which would be amazing). however this would mean i'd be busy for the rest of my life. which is good in some ways.

working on the farm you have lots of free time, do whatever the hell you want to all the time. most of the time this is work though. the problem is the social life kind of blows, the city is 40 miles away, and the education system isn't great. my family's back home though which would be nice.

What are going to grad school for 5-8 years for? Are you going to be a corn doctor?

My thought's exactly. Going at a slow pace would take 3 or 4 years. Get a master's then enter the field as a researcher. Use your farm as a research facility.

I'm currently in grad school for Physics. Yes it is a big time sink, but if you want to start a band you could probably make time. I'm currently working on doing that, located a drummer and need a guitarist and bassist.
Once your out of school you won't be "busy all the time", you will have plenty of time for fun. I've worked plenty of internships that I have a good idea of how the job works. You will have busy days, yes, but you will have plenty of free time to pursue other things that you are interested in.
I'm biased because I like school, but my vote is grad school + maybe try to make time for something fun.

In science, a Masters will usually take 2-3 years. This will get you cool jobs, but you have less choice in what you research. But, if you want to get the coolest jobs and have more a say in what you end up doing research on, you need a Ph.D. which on average takes 5-7 years.

He should be an evil researcher and do research that violates basic research ethics.

A degree in biochemistry, you say? I feel the answer is simple.
Engineer a species of super vegetables, and sell them. The super part is cocaine, so, you know... people will be addicted to your vegetables. It'll be natural, though, so you won't be breaking to many laws.

I'm not quite sure what biochemistry is, apparently.
