I had a brief discussion with my wife (who's going to be a social worker) about this yesterday because she's going to be interning at a drop-in shelter for homeless kids aged 13-22, a portion of which are LGBTQ kids from abusive (or otherwise intolerant) families.

Now of course, I support legal and social equality for all sexualities, which includes everything under the title of LGBTQ.

However, I just think it's a terrible title. Like, it's plain bad English and not very well thought out.

First of all, Lesbian is gender specific. Gay is not. Lesbian is already covered by Gay, so at the very least I think that it should be changed to GBTQ.

Also, I've seen other letters added on to the acronym to represent more specific groups that people identify with. I think it's a bad utilization of language (and acronyms) to continue adding letters to cover every specific sort of "non mainstream" sexual orientation.

I proposed "sexual minority" to my wife as a coverall term, but apparently any use of the term "minority" has fallen out of usage in the realm of social work and is no longer tolerated, which also seemed a bit silly to me. To use the lame, hackneyed, overused term, I think it's "too PC."

What does everyone else think about the acronym? Should we just keep increasing the length of the acronym? Or is it just a poorly constructed intermediary placeholder until we come up with a better term?

It's more of a "cover all grounds" kind of thing, like, "oh but gays work with guys, why can't you say lesbians too? Why can't we be proud of being gender specific?" or whatever. That's why there are so many letters because it's a touchy subject. I agree with you, but not everyone else will.

Right. It's basically supposed to include everyone except for heterosexual men and women who have their original sex organs and are happy with all of it.
