Car Decisions.
Hey guys Im getting my Permit in a week......There is a car I like, its a 2004 Subaru Forester for 4700$(Can get it for 4300$,and I can sell the racks for the top for about 200$),great condition,170k miles..
My parents believe I should wait until my license to get a car because of insurance, and I could almost have 4000$ in cash by the time of my license.... I dont think My insurance will be too high,Im will be taking Driver's Ed once I have my permit,Im a Good student(so Id get the discount for that),And a Defensive drivers course im taking...... In terms of the car I like Foresters(Im a tall guy,and the 2004 is ALOT better than older models),But im not going to lie I like Imprezas better(Outback sport,Outback,Sedan)..... But This thing is in great shape....Do you guys think I should wait until my license, and have almost enough to buy a 4-5 thousand car cash?Or buy the car and Have car payments? And insurance?

If you think you can have $4,000-$5,000 by the time you get your real license I'd wait. You can get a heck of first car for that kind of money.
If it was me I'd spend $1500 on a junk car and spend the rest on a sweet guitar ![]() ...you are asking car advice on a guitar website so it seems like the only viable solution. |

Insurance for new drivers in canada seems to be around 3-5k$ a year. If you get into even one accident its going up to 7.5-9k$ a year. So keep that in mind. Thats also with driving school accounted for.
Then theres your gas expenses and if anything breaks down (its a 2004 car, something will go wrong) you probably eant to have atleast 2k$ off to the side for unexpected repairs and car expenses. My cars a 2003 and has needed unexpected repairs, a couple of my friends have cars around that age that have also needed unexprcted repairs. Theres also gonna be a couple hundred in registration fees by the time you have the car, get it tested and get it registered properly. Im not saying dont go for the car but know what youre getting into. The actualy investment in the car is usually the smaller part of it for newish drivers. If you can find a way to take care of all the other costs i mentioned ten yea go for it

I dunno what it's like in America but insurance for a learner driver here in the UK is insane. I don't know rough numbers but it's generally more than the car cost itself.

Only your permit? No, you're rushing into things way to quickly. Wait til you have your license for at least half a year and then start looking at cars again.
