I don't think he's going to be the kind of player who is happy with a single guitar.

Yes...well listen to this...this is one lucky boy. His dad has bought him an Epiphone LP Custom Black Beauty (?) before I realised.... but I wanted to make sure he had something to play when he was at my place (unfortunately my ex and I not on particularly good terms...why?...cos he's a git...) Anyway...I thought go for something a bit different... saw this Epiphone Dot on Gumtree...pristine condition...as new...gorgeous cherry red, great price....and when the guy threw in an amp for me too I couldn't resist (came in well under budget all in all). Well thought it would give my son a couple of choices then...and I've been playing it since I got in at about 9.30pm so if he doesn't like it....well I just carry on then. I know it's a bit different from the LP...but my son loves loads of music going back to Chuck Berry and all that...so I think he'll enjoy it. Well...we'll see...
Thanks all for your help and advice. I've enjoyed reading your comments and picking up tips on how to choose and buy guitars. |

Sounds like a lucky boy to have parents who, while they may not care for each other anymore, still love their son & show it!

A Black Beauty and a Dot? Damn, wish I'd gotten a start like that!

Damn a black beauty is an insane guitar to start with. Any 11 year old would have been fine with an Epiphone dot.
Hope he appreciates the work you put into getting him this!

Your child is the luckiest person this month.
I had to work for 2 years to buy my first (proper) rig.

Yeah...there's a good few leaves to sweep up out there...! He's a good kid and doesn't ask for much...and I bought his sister quite a good (Kawai) electric piano when she got to a certain level on piano and her enthusiasm for playing and practicing went through the roof... so reckon it's worth getting him a decent instrument. Plus, we already have a fiasco every week of carrying about acoustic guitar, violin, his sister's bango and ukelele (ok that doesn't take much room), and school bags etc etc between houses. This guitar really is in perfect perfect condition and sounds great (even with me bashing out la la la la Lola and Country Roads, which is about my limit! lol).

+1 to epiphone.
first off - i'm of the belief that if you get the dream guitar when you're just starting, you'll only be disappointed by how much it doesn't make you a guitar god. let him have that excitement once he's gotten a few years down the line and really knows what he feels comfortable with when playing and holding a guitar. second - low end gibson les pauls tend to be a bit underwhelming. that's about it. EDIT: just saw that you made the leap. i hope your son gets a helluva lot of joy and inspiration out of his new guitar, +1 cool points to you as his mum and +1 happy new gear day to him as the proud owner of a black beauty. DOUBLE EDIT: just saw that he's now the proud owner of 2 guitars! y'know, i was gunna suggest a dot but didn't know how strictly the LP rule had to be followed... awesome! i really really wanna get an epi archtop some day, great guitars.
