Should Americans Care About Their Heritage?

I want replies from the American demographic of the Pit. Fellow Americans, should be care about our heritage, wherever it may be?

It's a question raised to me in the past week or so, and I'm curious about how other Americans feel about the matter. Serious answers, please refrain from trolling. It will be ignored so don't waste your time.

I am mexican raised in america and i dont give 2 dicks about heritage.

I don't think people should be ashamed of things people did before they were around. I don't think they should be proud either.

I don't see why it should be a big deal. Most consider it like a fun fact about themselves.

My grandmother was born in Italy. That's pretty cool to me I guess.

I honestly don't get why people get so upset about people saying where their family is from.

This.

I mean it's good to know your history and your country's/nationality's history of course, but I don't see it as a basis on how to live. Times change.

Yep, very proud of single-handedly saving Europe from the Nazis.

I also thought I'd bring up the phenomenon of 'resurgent atavism'. It's very interesting, actually, and may be why some are more passionate about their family/history than others.

I think it's totally fine to be proud of their heritage, but people shouldn't make a big deal out of it.

A couple years ago my Dad and I spent a long time tracing back our family, and I had a really good time with it. I found out that I'm indirectly related to famous historical figures like Robert E. Lee and Richard Henry Lee on that side.

On my mom's side, I'm descended from Italian and German immigrants. I've found their names on Ellis Island's computer.

I was fascinated by those experiences, and I will cherish them for the rest of my life, but at the same time, I don't let it define me. It's just neat information about me I guess.

Fact: anyone that says no has a lousy heritage so they have nothing to be proud of.

My family has been in America since before it was America, and it includes Native American blood, so I think I have every right to say my heritage is pretty cool.

Actually, Canadians may chime in, too. They're pretty much America, but with free health care and more tolerant, right?

No.

It is pretty much ******ed for the vast majority of people. I can see those who are 1st gen but not much beyond that. It is really just a way for people to try and feel some sense of accomplishment because they belong to some group.

Well, I care about the fact that my paternal ancestors were most likely German Jews who became Christians and then moved to America before WWI. I also have maternal ancestors who were Hugenots and others who were Pilgrims. So, there's a long, rather interesting history in my family.
