2 Person University Dorm+Guitar/Amp=Bad Combination
Hey guys i was shopping for universities today and was looking at dorms and really like the two person dorms (ie ft a roomate) but i wonder how that would go with me being a guitar player. Does anyone have any experience with this, cause i would get a single if it would potentially become an issue (btw i own a half stack :P)

It probably depends on your roommate. If I didn't play, I wouldn't mind it as long as he kept it on his side of the room, but I would mind if he was blaring shred at all hours of the day.
That said, a lot of guys tend to downgrade and leave their big amps at home when they move off to college.

Don't bring your half stack. It'll sit there, be too loud to play without pissing your whole floor off, let alone your roommate, and within two weeks, you'll be wishing you had the space for something else. You're better off getting something smaller, maybe a pod, or a micro cube, or whatever, and playing with that.

I play my Mesa Stiletto Ace at whatever f*cking volume I want all the time! That being said, my roommate is my best friend and we used to be in a band together, so he hardly minds. Surprised none of my neighbors have complained, but really I don't play exceedingly loud, because I'm stuck in a tiny room with the thing. Don't want to blow myself away. Actually I've gotten a few compliments from people walking by, because our heater is stupid and even now we have the windows open all the time.
Basically it depends on your roommate and your neighbors. edit: I suppose it also depends on how loud you're actually playing. Like I said, I keep mine at reasonable levels, I've never needed to crank my amp to get a good sound, nor have I ever been in a large enough area to actually crank it without killing myself. If you like to crank it, then you're probably going to run into problems, unless you only play when your roommate is gone.

Don't bring a half stack. There's probably some sort of dorm policy anyway

a good practice amp with a headphone jack does the trick just in case you want to keep playing late or something like that. I've got a roland cube 30 that does the trick nicely. always miss the halfstack but theres really no way to justify taking it

Guitar divided by Amp you say?
But seriously, play it safe and invest in a POD HD. Leave the amp at home, especially if it happens to be a tube amp.

Its like 11 o'clock here and I'm recording with my tube amp right now. Doesn't necessarily have to be a problem, it depends how loud you play it.

Yeah, be sure to check. Most Universities won't let you use a speaker over a certain wattage. Some places wouldn't even let you have something as large as a half stack in your dorm, you would have to store it in the music department.
That was a big issue for me when I came college, I ended up only playing acoustic while at school to save myself the tremendous hassle/nuisance that it causes. |

I never had a problem with a 75watt amp. I just rarely played it loud. And if anything, most amps have headphone ports.

do not bring a half stack to your dorm unless you want everyone in the building to hate you.

My roommate is a guitarist as well, so that made things a lot easier. Though he plays mostly acoustic guitar and I do acoustic and electric, I usually use headphones with my electric or low volume on my amp.

When I moved into my uni dorm last year I bought a pod and played through headphones. Saves on space and you barely make any noise.

Guitar amps are louder than your realise and nobody wants to hear you practicing. Theres a dude in my building that manages to piss off the entire building with a 10watt Ibanez practice amp.
My dorm room is so tiny I literally wouldn't be able to turn around if I had a 4x12 in it. So yeah, I only keep my acoustic there...otherwise go for the POD route. Last edited by seljer : 11-10-2012 at 02:02 PM. |
