Yes you can make equations for it, but they're not perfect sine waves ; sure they're periodic, but they are almost never actual sine waves.

No, intelligence has no bearing on musical taste.
I know someone with a 145 IQ who listens to nothing but Soulja Boy and 50 Cent.

I love all the people going 'It doesn't 'cause I know someone who's very clever but who listens to [insert non metal/rock-related musical genre here]'. The assumption that the music they listen to is intelligent and that chart music isn't is fun.

Although, given that this seems to be a theme of the thread, I'd conjecture that we've just proven that rock and metal and all things related are clearly the reserve of the unintelligent, and that Lil Wayne and Ke$ha are signs of elevated intelligence.

There is a positive correlation between intelligence and being a Bon Jovi fan. The more songs you know by heart the more intelligent you are.

Depends on how much they care about music. If an intelligent person told me they were really into music, then proceeded to say they love some Top40 band I would roll my eyes and tell them to listen to Miles Davis, Aphex Twin or Eno. If an intelligent person told me they weren't into music much and were more into other pop culture forms and told me they like some Top40 band I wouldn't think any less of them. It basically depends on how smart that person likes to act and how much they act like they like music. I like to think I am pretty intelligent, and definitely think I have a pretty good understanding of music so my musical tastes are pretty different than the majority of peoples I have met in person. I can think of maybe one or two people who have the same tastes as me I have met. I listen to most music of the 20th and 21st century with a little bit of classical like Mozart, Chopin and Vivaldi. Sounds general but my tastes are often called eclectic.

One type of music I fine not to my tastes is pop due to the commercialism and artificiality of the music. I do like girls that look sexy in music videos, so Nicki Minaj and Miley Cyrus can sing about going insane and cake all they want as long as they look hot. I don't enjoy their music because it is the artistic equivalent of reality TV, I do enjoy their look. They know it is about their look so they continue to use it, so that is what I value them for, more power to them. As a side note I was reluctant to listen to Sasha Grey's band aTelecine but I found their music pretty interesting and very creative. I try not to be snobby about my tastes, but I can come off like that on accident sometimes.

Most of the people who i have met who i would say are quite intelligent, or educated in music listen to more complex stuff. Having said that, listening to complex music doesn't make you intelligent, and listening to simple stuff doesn't make you stupid.

I don't think intelligence has to have an affect on musical taste.
Musical tastes tend to be based upon the emotional attachment one feels when listening to music. Emotions do not rely upon intelligence.

That said, I think intelligence can have an affect on musical taste because intelligence allowes us to appreciate what's gone intoi making the music, particularly if it's quite complex music.

Personaly, I consider myself to be a reasonably intelligent guy, but my favourite music is actualy very basic stuff, rock 'n' roll based three chord trick kinda stuff with a very simple 4/4 back beat.

I think a bigger factor than intelligence is how we perceive ourselves and our need for belongingness. People define themselves by the clothes they wear, who they hang out with, and the music they listen to. Most people want to fit in and part of that is listening to whatever music is popular (familiarity also makes us enjoy things more, so if you go to most social outings you're going to hear popular songs over and over and over and thus like it more in a sort of negative feedback loop).

Other people who are probably losers and don't identify with popular culture are more inclined to listen to other forms of music. This is part of why we associate certain garb with hipsterdom, goth-weirdos, emos, and so forth.

Now one might be able to make an argument that Intelligent people tend to be less accepted for being different or they may have a tendency to be introverted, which would in turn effect how they present themselves and thus possibly what music they listen to.

In conclusion if you're intelligent you listen to Jazz and/or Classical music.

Music is subjective.

You don't need to know equations when hunting for food.
At best you need to know addition, subtraction, division and multiplication when you're trying to figure out how much seeds you need to plant, but that's agriculture, not hunting.

I think so, but only a little. For example, chances are if you listen to metal, you're dumb; but I doubt that every metal fan is stupid.

I think intelligence affects your attitude to music, rather than your taste. If you are an intelligent person, I'd say you're less likely to suffer from the narcissistic delusion that the tastes of other individuals have to resemble your own in order for them to be as 'intelligent' or enlightened as you. I know plenty of metalheads (being a longtime fan of metal myself) who believe that metalcore fans are less intelligent than themselves. They are the real idiots.
