Good budget tube amps?
Hey!
I'm looking for a tube amp for practise with drums, and eventually gigs. I've been told to look into getting a tube amp. I mostly play pop-punk / alternative rock / garage rock type stuff. So it needs to have good distortion and not be too dark sounding! I'll be going for a combo and don't want to spend too much! Only things I've seen so far that interest me are; The Peavy Valveking 112 combo, and the Blackstar Venue Series HT Club 40W combo Anyone have any experience with these amps? or anyone got any good suggestions for an amp I might like? ![]() Thanks! - Ace |

Really, I'm trying not to go too much over 500, but I can be a little flexible.

Used Hot Rod Deluxe. Definitely one of the best workhorse amps around.

Where is a good place to find used amps? Is Ebay trustworthy with amps?

I would avoid eBay. Lots of up-charging and the shipping can be a little steep. Fender Blues Jr. Would be good, probably under $300.

The VK is a diecent first tube amp. The cleans are pretty diecent and it has a diecent amount of gain on tap. The speaker Isn't the best, so maybe an upgrade would be inorder if you buy it. There are lots of mods you can do to them to make them much better than they are stock.

The DSL401 slays the VK 1x12. Deff look in to the DSL, they are really nice amps and they sound good too. I have had my DSL 100 for a few months and it is a great head.

Yep. We have all the mod cons over here Don't know how it is overseas, but in the UK CL is a bit of a pain in the arse as you have to use the one nearest you, you can't just search the whole site for what you're after. I guess that's OK if you're in one of the bigger cities, but for me it means I have to search for everything a few times to cover everywhere I could collect from TS - if you're going used, it can also be worth checking sites list Cash Converter/Generator to see if they have what you're looking for. No personal experience, but I've heard of people finding good deals there.

traynor ycv50b on thomann
gak had/has some deals on genz benz stuff, but a lot of it has gone already. the 100 watt el diablo combo still seems to be available, though, at £550. might be too modern-voiced for what you want, though. fwiw, the blackstar isn't all-tube, and the boost in the vk is solid state (though it can be turned off, which is something). I haven't tried the blackstar (it may sound great), but it's worth bearing in mind. I think you can do better than the VK at your budget (or the HRD or dsl401, but that might be more verging into personal opinion).

The ValveKing is a nice amp from what I remember. My dad had one a few years ago and it sounded really nice, but I remember being surprised that it didn't have more gain. I have no experience with that Blackstar.
I would suggest seeing if you can find a used Egnater Rebel 30. I got one a few months ago and it's potentially my favorite amp that I've played up to this point. You can get so many different sounds! Not too expensive, either. I got mine used in NYC for $500 and change (can't remember the exact price). |

+1 I owned a ValveKing for a while. Decent amp, not great. I honestly wouldn't even consider it if you can get a DSL though.

There's a used one on Ebay I might be able to look at because it's only 350£ Can I get quite a ballsy, but not too dark pop punk or alternative rock sound from it? |
