Name for this technique?
Hey, Ive been watching some necrophagist guitar covers on YouTube, such as this one:
When He is playing that main riff at 0:19 , His Right hand seems to be "swaying" to pick the strings rather than going down down down as I Would do, Is there a name for this kind of "Swaying" "up and down Sweep" kind of picking? Thanks, I'd Definitely want to practice it ![]() |

I actually have no idea what you mean, he's not doing anything out of the ordinary there at all...

I think he's saying that the guitarist in the video is alternate picking, whereas the topic creator downpicks. Alternate picking is standard for guitarists, and if you're not capable of it, I would not recommend trying a Necrophagist piece, as they're pretty tricky.

He's not sweeping. I'm guessing you mean when he hits those higher notes in the riff while alternate picking? What he's doing is a combination of string skipping and inside picking. String skipping is pretty self-explanatory - you play two non-adjacent strings by jumping over the one(s) in between them. Example: Code:
Inside picking is a type of cross-picking. Cross-picking is when you are playing a series of notes on two or more strings by alternate picking. You can do either inside- or outside-picking. Inside-picking is when you use an upstroke for the string that is physically above and a down stroke for a string that is physically below. Outside picking is the opposite - downstroke for the string physically above and upstroke for the string physically above. Inside picking: Code:
Outside picking: Code:

Don't practice for speed, practice to make it good and speed will come in time.

Don't worry about speed. Speed comes from relaxing your muscles and making the smallest movements possible for each pick stroke. Focus on those two things and speed will come naturally.
