Hey I'm looking for my first electric guitar since I've only play with accoustic guitar until now..

My budget max is $500

I'd like to play blues, metal (like metallica, RATM) alternative, and maybe a little bit funk

Preferences? body not to metalish like V model, Right handed, 6 strings, warm sound

Pickups? - humbuckers but if single coil can produce a better sound, why not

New or Used? - New

Location? - Capital city of Indonesia

Current Gear? - just an accoustic guitar

I've looking and surf the web about this but there's too many choices and they dont give an explanation about how that guitar play kind of music

So maybe the expert guitarist can help me to choose the best guitar for me. And don't worry about the amp

To get the most bang for your buck, might I suggest you look at some of the brands manufactured locally?

If so, try Swing, Radix or Tradition.

Otherwise, I'd look at Epiphones & Ibanez in that price range.

Why don't you need an amp?

I'd look for a used Japanese or USA brand, Humbuckers that split will also work like single coils, so they just make more sense to me. I'd look at Ibanez, I find them to be pretty good value.

If it's your first electric and you've never tried one before i suggest you
to go to your local music store ask a employee and try as much guitars as possible.

I mean I can borrowed from my brother. And I think for beginner like me using tremolo is next step ahead and I dont know the differences about that


I'm sorry but I dont have any favourite brand, model or something like that, since I dont know the differences and never used it before. I just want to get the best guitar for playing the type of music that I like within my budget. For example, neck profil: I can get adjust to that.
Just tell me what do you think the best and I can used it for a long time while I learning to play my electric guitar technique. Or maybe you can tell me what the cons about that guitar so I dont get too sad nor sorry later.

Yes, possibly. I don't know what the shipping costs, import taxes and tariffs are on guitars where you live, but they are not trivial. So if you can find something you like that is locally made, it will probably be less expensive than a guitar of comparable quality that has been imported from somewhere else.

And there is nothing wrong with stimulating the economy by buying locally if you're getting what you want.

I recommended Swing, Radix, and Tradition because I know they all have at least part of their production in Indonesia. Some of those look good enough to me that I'm contemplating trying them out, like the Swing Exciter Gold, or Radix's Osiris or Royal.

Tradition, oddly, has no approved dealers in Asia, near as I can tell. However, theyntwke orders directly on their website- cheaper than the retail price: a $760 guitar in their Pro line costs only $550 when ordered directly.

And anyway, you might be able to go to the factory and buy direct. Sometimes, that means you get access to options that are not otherwise available.

Forget the squidoo link. Whoever wrote that did it to make some money off affilliate marketing. I wonder if the author ever touched a guitar.

The info from musicradar is from people with real knowlegde about guitars. They also make money from their site of course, but the info is of much better quality.

I prefer to buy used guitars because decent guitars last.

If I had $500 to spend now, I would get a used PRS SE of some sort. They're wonderful for high gain stuff, they get you beautiful clean tones for blues, funk. Even looks wise they have that versatility.

I have to say I haven't tried an Ibanez RG350 myself, but I'm trying to test one as soon as I can. They can be had new for around $400 and having the impression pretty versatile when it comes to sounds as well. Looks are quite metal-ish of course.

EDIT: What dannyalcatraz is saying above my post makes a lot of sense. Din't see that post yet.

The only way you'll find a guitar you'll actually like is by developing your own preferences. And the only way you do that is by going out to a guitar store and trying as many guitars that you like the look of as you can. It's the only way you can do it.

There is not such thing as 'the best guitar'. It's all subjective. I think that the reasons companies do these 'lists' is because those brands on the list paid them to put their products on it.

My suggestion as well.

A Mexican Fat Strat will be within that budget even new. You can find an used for even cheaper.


You will have two single coils in the neck and middle for blues and funk tones that single coils do really well and in the neck is a humbucker for fatter rock/metal tones.

Go into a guitar store, try everything in your price range, and buy what feels best to you. If there are no guitar stores, look up reviews on youtube.

what do you mean by "fat"? is it fat neck? If I looking to internet how do I know which model is fat or not fat. Can you give me an example which guitar it is in web store so I can do more research with it

there's guitar store but they not selling every brand. For example
store A: fender, ibanez
store B: epiphone, gibson
store C: PRS, ESP
etc

I want to do like you say but you know.. its hard to compare each other

different guitars are so different that you NEED to go to a shop and play, see what you like and then come back and ask us.

A Fat Strat is a Strat that has been equipped with at least one humbucker: normal Strats have 3 single-coils (SSS), while Fat Strats typically have a humbucker in the bridge (HSS) or sometimes a humbucker in the bridge and neck (HSH).
