Trade Options on the Quick Rod

I recently traded for a Quick Rod, thinking it was gonna be the end-all amp for my tastes. It's definitely a nice amp but not quite what I'm after tonally, so it's been on the trade block for a few days now. I like the QR and the general tone it has. I wish it had more saturation and not quite as bright though.

Here's what I'm after:
-High Gain British flavor, with a useable clean channel
-Brighter than darker, with a low-mid growl
-More Saturation than the QR
-Something not as tight as the QR

I really liked the Jet City JCA100H that I had, probably my favorite amp I've owned. Which makes me think a Soldano Hot Rod would be in order . So far I've been offered the following amps. I'd like some opinions on these vs what I'm going after tonally. It's not like I can go to a music shop and try these out either, finding gear of this caliber is rare where I'm at.

Titan Custom 200
Bogner Shiva (I need to check this one out more)
Marshall Vintage Modern (pass)
JCM800 2210 (pass)
Engl Powerball V1
EVH 5150 III (pass)

oooh...a shiva....yum. I've only played one once and don't know shit about them other than they sound amazing.

the powerball is gonna be very sterile and lack in the mid department. it'll also be quite bright.

Pretty much

I wouldn't mind adding cash to a trade, but I don't have enough (or the desire) to throw that much at an amp

I'm really liking the clips on the Shiva, that's my favorite offer. Unless a Hot Rod pops up, or somebody wants to give away their Friedman Marsha

I finally got my 2x12 (V30 and G12H30), I like it a LOT better than with the Emi V12. Now the low end is sounding a little odd, but I still haven't rolled preamp tubes through it. This is shaping up to be a keeper , it just wasn't working out with the V12

Shiva sounds like exactly what you're for. Kinda like an 800 with more lower mid grunt and gain along with a fantastic clean channel. The Titan is cool too, but if you're looking for decent low mid content, you might find it lacking.

EDIT: Honestly, I'd trade for the Shiva regardless. It's worth a few hundred more than the QR if it's in good condition. They go for $1500-1600 regularly, a bit more if they have reverb.

Yeah this one has reverb on both channels. It's not KT88 model though, it's the EL34 one.
EDIT: It's the newer version with the bright switches as well

What's the size of the Shiva? I've got a very nice road case that came with the Splawn, if the Shiva will fit snug that'd be great. The Splawn is a fullsize Marshall shell correct?

This might seem kind of obvious so might as well get it out of the way - have you looked at a Marshall DSL or a Laney VH100?

Shiva is smaller. Won't fit in the case.

DSL is cool but these are a higher league of amps than the DSL or VH100

I just had a realization. Here's the chain of events that led to the QR, and possibly the Bogner.

Paid $400 for the Jet City
Traded it for a JSX
Traded the JSX for a Gibson 50s Tribute LP
Sold the Tribute for $700
Picked up a Mesa Trec & 2x12 for $600
Traded the Mesa for the QR & road case (kept the 2x12)

EDIT: Well that's a little bumming. I bet I could find some high density foam and redo the interior to fit the Shiva.. assuming I trade for it.

Shiva would be cool.

Yes, the Splawn headshell is the exact size of teh Marshall. Scott used to make replacement Marshall headshells and the the dude I traded headshells with was making a Marshall clone and needed a 'perfect' plexi headbox.

Of the stuff you've mentioned I've played the 5153 and the Soldano Hot Rod. Those would be my rec's if you don't keep the QR.

But please get some JJ's in there before you give up. I've tried Tung Sol, Penta Labs (Shuguangs), Groove, EHX and even 5751 and JJs are my favorite. I also don't consider my amp too bright but maybe it is more the type of music I play. Greg would be a good sounding board on this topic. I also mainly run JJs and then SED =C= in the power section and Mullards before the SEDs so.

Oh I will 311, I'll probably do it today when I'm off work. I'm keeping the Shiva guy active in conversation until I decide one way or another, these QR's are popular for a reason and I'm gonna figure out why before I part ways with it

This clocking in at 430 in the morning bullshit is getting old in a hurry..

interesting- i could see not liking v12s with some amps. however, with others, they're great.

I loved the V12 with the Jet City, however with the Splawn it was outrageous. Very stiff and made the upper mids sound funky, I dunno how to explain it. The G12H30/V30 combo is much more fitting, I wouldn't mind replacing the V30 with something else though. My V12 is 8 ohms and the other 2 are 16. I also tried the amp with "Speakers from a JCM800 halfstack" loaded in an MG cab (weak flabby bass) and a stock XXX cab, which sounded horrendous. Not much info there, but still relevant

I'll be rolling tubes through the Splawn in a bit, I'm currently fighting with a cell phone company on the phone..

yeah sometimes things just don't match. the v12s matched my laney fine, but wouldn't have been my first pick. sounds like the splawn was much worse in that regard. but yeah, as you said, they're awesome with jet city.
