overly noisy Tele
My Tele has too much hum. My Strat hummed a lot, but I could get around it. My Tele has so much hum at a dirty and loud tone, that the hum is almost as loud as anything less than very hard strumming. I have to touch the volume or tone pots with the flesh of my palm to make it go away. Is there a grounding or shielding issue?

if the tele is humming... and the strat was humming too, then what makes you think it is the guitar.
technically both guitars could be ungrounded or have horrible shielding or something, but this sounds more like an amp problem to me. try out another guitar (maybe a friend has one?) and if the hum is still there then most likely it's the amp that is humming.

you say it has hum when dirty and loud... how about clean and loud?
sounds like you may just be getting feedback from using a lot of gain with single coil pickups but you saying you need to touch it does sound like it could be grounding issues too.

The humming is louder than the Strat. Much louder. The Strat exhibits normal single coil noise, but the Tele is even worse. It was like that in the store that I got it from, but I figured that I would get around to rectifying the problem some other time. After playing around with it for just practicing at home, I realize that the guys will not tolerate the noise if I take it to play out. It's useless for recording. I like how it sounds and plays and intend to put some nicer things on it, but that noise has to go...or at least diminish a bit. So if the noise goes away when I touch my knobs, it might be a grounding issue?

is it in all 3 positions on the tele? do you have a multimeter with a "beep" continuity test?

The middle and the bridge positions are the noisiest, but all positions are consistently more noisy than my Strat.

and it goes as soon as you touch the bridge, or any metal part of the guitar?
sounds like bridge pickup isnt grounded properly

the neck pickup tends to be less noisy because of it's cover, so that's odd, it could be that the grounding wire under the bridge has slipped or something.
if you have a multimeter, set it to beep mode, touch the outside of the jack socket with one end, and check the cover on the neck pickup, and the bridge. And report back ![]()
