Back the thread, honestly if anything, Macca is overrated. He was the right bassist for the Beatles. And that's the extent of his bass playing fame.

With that I think one his better bass work is on "Something".

I think he's under rated, one of the best, most original bassists ever as far as pop composition. Some tracks the bass is not really that noticeable but as always is the songs core. Too many great lines to select one, not really a huge fan, but full respect.

Paul Mccartney is overrated. Still a great player i'd say Come Together is a pretty awesome bassline.

If you make number 3 on a list, that's not under rated. And yes, he's a great pop composer, but that doesn't make him a great bassist.

I have a lot of respect for the guy. He wrote and played relatively lively and interesting bass lines while singing at the same. I wouldn't put him close to the top 100 in sheer skill but, as someone with no love for the Beetles, I like him quite a bit.

For the record, he is horribly overrated but, then again, so is every musician from every major pop band: The Beetles, Led Zeppelin, Oasis, Guns n Roses; each of their members will appear in every top [n] [instrument] players of all time. This doesn't mean their good but it certainly doesn't mean their bad.

I'm not sure what my point was there, interpret it how you like.

I think there's a lot of under-appreciated basslines on the early beatles stuff. But that's because you can't really hear them.

This is a sentiment I could get behind. But I am stunned and amazed there are actually XTC fans out there still. The whole group is an under-appreciated gem.
