"cool" parents are annoying and weird.
between my former friend's mom talking casually with me about abusing Ambien and smoking "bones" and my one friend's ex-girlfriend's parents being weirdos and hosting underage drinking parties, they're not really cool so much as irresponsible and lame.

My parents were never very strict with me; they really didn't need to be. I didn't really cause trouble (that they're aware of), and was generally an easy kid. My brother on the other hand... Jesus. They weren't too strict with him either, because their main objective was to keep him out of prison. Now, I'm living with my dad until college in January. His philosophy is "my house, my rules. 18 (now I'm 19) means nothing, you're still a kid." But this really just means he makes me tell him who I'm with when I go out, and I can't have guys alone in my room.
I haven't lived with my mom since I was 12, but I don't think she'd be too strict either. She walked in on my brother smoking a bowl once, and just told him not to burn down he house. Once we turned 18, my one friend's parents didn't really care if we drank, but it was at their house and in a "safe environment."
I think that's a great, responsible way of doing things. Stupid law be damned.

Nah, in some places in the US you can get your license and drive unaccompanied at like 14 or something, but that's only in like the midwest and stuff. Everywhere else it's 16.
