I need a new amp!
Hello
I've been using a Fender Frontman 15g for years because I'm poor like that, but really its dying and it sucks more than rebecca black. I dont really know much about amps so I thought I'd post here. My answers to the sticky "questionnaire": Budget? - ~300 $ Genres? - I like playing a bunch of different things, from irish folk music to death metal, so something polyvalent would be great. However I like punk rock and power metal a lot. New or Used? - New because I tend to keep my stuff for 10 years Home or Gig? - Home Closest City? - Montreal Current Gear? - My guitar is a fender strat squier affinity (pretty long name i know o_O) I dont have any pedals Thanks! Summary: I like when there is a great variety of tones, so not lets say something awesome for metal but terrible for everything else. I searched on google and found "peavey vypyr 30" it looks great but like I said I dont really know much. Thanks again Last edited by Wormwoode : 11-15-2012 at 11:11 PM. |

If you play metal and you want new, peavey vyper is your only choice.

The vypyr is pretty much your best bet in this price range, and it seems to be exactly what you are looking for.

I'm a little surprised everyone's endorsing the Vypyr, first, I'm pretty sure you won't find it for $300 or less in Canada new and I don't have any experience with it myself but most of what I've heard hasn't been positive (maybe the tube model's better though). One of my friends has been using a different Peavey tube/modeling amp, (the Penta) and hates it. You might be able to find a Valveking combo within your price range, it's all-tube. And since you're in Canada you might want to check out Traynor amps (Long and Macquade own Traynor/Yorkville products).

^ The Vypyr Tube kicks the crap out of the ValveKing at any application. There's not much point in owning an "all tube amp" if it's not that great (though there seem to be a fair number of people who would disagree).
TS, used Vypyr 60. In your budget, all $300 new is going to get you is another practice amp. Go used or don't bother. /harsh

I have never owned a Vypyr, but I do own a valveking. From what I have heard from the vypyr, it can destroy the valveking on most things. There are a few applications where the valveking really shines (basically classic rock and clean, too much gain and it will get muddy without an EQ pedal), but if you want versatility go vypyr.

Well I guess I was wrong about the Vypyr. Still, if you're getting used the 6505 combo's probably in the same price range as the Vypyr. The 6505's more specifically for metal though and I guess the cleans kind of suck on it.

Hey thanks for your answers
So I checked the Peavey Vypyr 30 and found an used one for $150. The dude says that he doesn't need an amp that loud. I dunno if I should trust that, that's why I was kind of relunctant about buying an used one. The peavey 60 is way too expensive for me, even used. :S Also has anyone only bought an amp off amazon? Does it work well? I was planning to search in stores but i was wondering. ty ( i should stop thanking everyone all the time =P) |

the vypyr 30 is a decent amp for practicing amp jammin but nothing else. don't expect to gig with it. It's got a 12 in speaker which is much better than the 8 inch 15w speaker in the other model. more bass and sounds more open.
I've never had a bad experience buying anything from amazon. I'd trust it. |

I have a Fender Mustang III, and its unbelievably versatile. It has lots of build in effects, so you won't need any pedals with it.

Well if you like the amp you have, why not have a shop freshen it up for you?
Maybe install a whole new set of tubes and have them go though it, cleaning up or replacing pots, jacks and what not. If they're still working, keep the old tubes for spares just in case you need one in a hurry sometime. Just a thought. Quote:

As someone who has owned a Valveking and a Vypyr 60 and played all of the Vypyrs I can recommend the Vypyr 60. It is very versatile and can cover folk to death metal. I got mine used at Guitar Center for $315. I've seen them as low as $250. So, they ARE within your budget. I really don't consider the Jet Cities to be of 'high quality'. No better than the Vypyr and not nearly as versatile. The Mustang, while versatile, cannot do death metal from what I understand. Never played one BTH.
Also, the Vypyr takes external pedals real well - something you won't find very often with other modeling amps. I'm curious though. What kind of Folk music are you into? That, and who are your favorite Death Metal bands?

![]() He said it sucks worse than Rebecca Black. The Frontman is not a tube amp either. I think maybe you posted in the wrong thread??

I didn't see where he said he hated it, he said it was dying. I don't look up all the amps, I simply assumed that since it was old it was a tube unit.
Not that I consider tubes all that great to begin with anyway. I'm a really old fart that started out with tubes but I actually prefer FETs now. Quote:

Check out Axe Music . They deal with a lot of different brands, and they have free shipping within Canada.
They also carry Jet City.
